The Other Woman
The next day, Aurora woke up unusually early, her mind still clouded with thoughts of Edwin leaving abruptly the previous evening. Determined to bridge the growing distance she felt, she decided to surprise him.
After preparing a simple yet thoughtful breakfast, she packed it carefully and headed straight to Edwin’s house.
By now, Edwin’s house staff and guards were familiar with her visits. Without much questioning, they allowed her inside, exchanging polite nods and smiles. Aurora moved quietly through the grand, silent halls of the house, her footsteps barely making a sound on the polished wooden floors.
As she neared Edwin’s room, she instinctively slowed her pace.
Just as she reached the door, she heard Edwin’s voice from inside. He was talking on the phone, and the door was slightly ajar, giving her a clear view of him.
He was standing in front of a mirror, adjusting his tie, getting ready for the day. The phone was on speaker mode, allowing Aurora to hear both sides of the conversation.
“Yes, yes, I’m coming for lunch,” Edwin said casually, his tone neutral but polite.
Aurora’s curiosity was piqued. Who’s he talking to so early? she wondered. She leaned closer, straining her ears to catch more of the conversation.
Suddenly, a woman’s voice echoed through the speaker, her tone warm and cheerful.
“Wonderful, honey! Finally, you agreed!”
Aurora froze.
Her mind raced. Who the hell is that? And why is she calling him ‘honey’?!
Edwin, unfazed, responded with a simple, “Hmm.”
The woman continued, her voice playful yet persistent. “So, how about we have dinner together after lunch as well?”
Aurora’s grip tightened on the breakfast bag she was holding. Her thoughts spiraled. Dinner?! What’s going on here?
Edwin’s reply was calm, almost dismissive.
“No, I already have plans for dinner with someone else.”
The woman let out a teasing laugh. “Oh, it’s not with your girlfriend, is it?”
Aurora’s heart skipped a beat. She leaned closer, her anger and confusion bubbling up.
“No,” Edwin replied firmly. “I have other work to do.”
The woman’s laughter rang out again, light but with an edge of teasing curiosity.
“Ooh, so you’re not going with your girlfriend. You have other work to do. Won’t your girlfriend feel bad about this?”
Aurora clenched her jaw, her mind racing with questions.
The woman continued, her tone shifting slightly, as if testing the waters.
“You’re always busy with work whenever I ask you to meet. Does your girlfriend never complain about your behavior? She must be really patient with you.”
Edwin didn’t respond to this. Instead, he redirected the conversation. “Alright, let’s go over all the files during lunch. That should cover everything.”
“Fine, fine,” the woman replied, clearly amused. But then she added with a teasing edge, “But tell me something honestly—this girlfriend of yours that everyone talks about, does she really exist? Or did you just make her up to keep people from disturbing you?”
