Chapter fourteen
"You will choose her."
As Scarlett and Hershel walked up to Rick, Glenn joined them.
"Holy shit," Glenn breathed.
"You all right?" Rick asked him.
"Yeah," Glenn replied.
Rick looked to his left. "Hershel?"
Hershel gave a firm nod.
Rick then turned to Scarlett, gently placing his hand against the side of her face. Scarlett nodded, reaching up to place her hand over his. "Are you?" she asked softly.
Rick nodded back.
"Let's head back," Hershel urged.
Rick crouched down to Tony's body, retrieving the man's gun and searching his pockets for extra ammunition. Glenn moved over to Dave's body to take his weapon. As Hershel, Rick, and Scarlett began moving toward the exit, Glenn hurried to follow.
Suddenly, headlights cut through the darkness outside.
"Car. Car," Rick whispered sharply, stopping them in their tracks. As the beam of light swept toward the building, he ordered, "Get down."
Rick and Scarlett dropped low on the left side of the entrance, while Glenn and Hershel took cover on the right. Outside, an engine killed, followed by the heavy thud of car doors opening.
"Dave? Tony? They said over here?" a man's voice called out.
"Yeah," a second man replied.
"I'm telling you, man, I heard shots," a third voice insisted."I saw roamers two streets over," the second man countered. "Might be more around here."
"It's hot. We gotta get out of here," the first man said, his voice tense.
"Dave! Tony!" the third one shouted.
"Shut up, you idiot! You wanna attract 'em?" the first man hissed. "Just stick close. We're gonna find 'em."
Silhouettes stretched across the glass of the door as the men approached.
"Dude, he said to stay close," the second man muttered.
"Tony..." the third one called out again, his voice fading slightly as their footsteps began to move away.
Glenn parted the curtain slightly, peering out into the darkness. Rick stood up next to him to take a look, then quickly crouched back down. He crept across the floor toward Glenn and Hershel.
"Why won't they leave?" Glenn whispered, his voice trembling.
"Would you?" Hershel whispered back.
Rick leaned in closer. "We can't sit here any longer. Let's head out the back and make a run for the car."
"Are you crazy?" Scarlett hissed.
Before Rick could answer, a sudden blast of gunfire shattered the silence outside. Rick lunged back toward Scarlett, standing just high enough to steal another glance through the window.
"What happened?" the first man's voice barked from the street.
"Roamers. I nailed 'em," the third man replied, breathless.
"They disappeared, but their car's still here," the second man noted. A brief pause followed before he spoke again. "I cleared those buildings. You get this one?"
"No," the second man said.
"Me neither," the third one added.
"We're looking for Dave and Tony, and no one checks the damn bar?" the first man snapped.
