Are you lying?

Being at home was something that tormented Kali, always in the back of her mind like a virus. When she was at school, there was a false sense of security, knowing that one word from her mother could ruin her day.

Her mum loved her, that's why she was so harsh. She was strict, but she did it with good intentions, even when her daughter started to resent her for it.

Kali's father wasn't present, so all of that responsibility fell to her mum. It was a stressful situation for a wizard who was pureblood, trying to hold up the expectations that were made for their family. When that family wasn't perfect, came repercussions.

Take the Malfoys for example. Who knows what goes on behind closed doors, especially when their son doesn't want to open the letters his dad sent him, yet to the public, they seem like the perfect family. As long as you present yourself in a way that goes with your class, then there aren't any problems.

Kali's mum doesn't have an abundance of money. She has enough to get by and buy extravagant pieces of furniture for her home, but not enough to
spoil her daughter, even if she wanted to.

Mrs. Swan sat on her new sofa, yellow velvet and very hard. Her hair was tied up in a complicated updo that pulled her forehead back. In her hands was The Daily Prophet, probably speaking about the graduating class of this year.

Approaching slowly, Kali sat before her, her hands fidgeting together. There was no reason to be nervous if she stuck to the script. "Can I speak to you, mother?"

With a hard jaw, her mother looked up, motioning for her to continue with a quick raise of her eyebrows. Not a woman of many words.

"Yesterday, at the train station, Mrs. Zabini approached me." This was a blatant lie, but the truth would set her mother off on a rant about safety. "I tutored her son, Blaise, this semester. To thank me for his good grades, she gave me and Carla an invite to her wedding in two days. I know it's a lot to ask for, but she wants us to stay the week at her house."

Her mother stayed silent, staring at Kali, evaluating her words. "Are you lying?"

Kali opened and closed her mouth, hoping that the bending of truth wasn't obvious. "Of course not."

"Do you like her son? Is that it?" She questioned, not even knowing half of what she was asking. "Because no matter how much money and status they have, they are all the same. They'll leave you alone as soon as something gets serious."

This whole conversation was making Kali mad, and her unbiased words against Blaise made her skin boil, but she couldn't fight if she wanted to go to the wedding. "I think he's nice, mother, but we are just friends. You know I've never been to a wedding and what better one to go to than a Zabini one. Plus, it will be just across the patch of grass."

"A week seems excessive." Was her reply, short and concise.

"The celebration lasts that long, between dinners and presents." The truth was that the day after the wedding Mrs. Zabini left her house to her son, and he was planning on spending the five days with his friends having fun.

Her mother raised an eyebrow, pursing her lips. "You and your friend will have separate rooms than her son?"

"Of course." No, they weren't, but that wasn't pertaining to the conversation at hand.

"I do not know if I can trust you at that house alone with her son and your irresponsible friend." Her voice got an edge, as it usually does.

Kali sighed, racking her brain for things she could say to fix it. "Consider this practice for when I leave for University after summer. After all, Carla and I will be living alone."

"To a muggle university, unfortunately." She rolled her eyes, disappointment running through her mind. "Instead of studying to be an auror."

"Well, there's no point in fighting on it now since I'm paying for my studies and my housing." Kali said with a bit of sharpness, not wanting to be attacked. "Plus, Hogwarts had a lot more boys running around, and I haven't done anything for you to not trust me."

Mrs. Swan looked at the sky, like she was asking how to deal with her daughter. "You don't even have the proper clothing to go."

The beautiful green dress came to her mind, almost grinning at the details and who got it for her. "I think I have an old dress, which I can use. No worries about clothes, I can find some."

"After your good grades, I suppose you can go to the wedding." Her mother finally said the words she needed to hear. "You need to behave or you will never leave this home again."

Kali smiled big, standing up from her spot. She almost hugged her mom but that was way too much for a woman that hated physical contact. Giving her mum a thumbs up, Kali rushed to her room and sat on the bed, grabbing her bag and starting to pack for the amazing week ahead of her.
