Chapter 78 - Second chance

Xavier pads into the room, and climbs up onto the bed, laying down next to his father. Lily's raises her head; she has been clinging to her mate's still warm body. At her request, all the tubes and medical equipment have been removed. Atlas looks at peace, like he is sleeping.

"Papa is gone" Xavier says, as he strokes his father's face

Lily shudders and looks at Xavier, in her grief, she had momentarily forgotten about their son and how this will affect him "yes my darling, papa has gone to the moon" she reaches out and holds Xavier's hand.

"He came and said goodbye to me, he was with a white wolf" says Xavier

Lily gasps "you saw papa in your dreams...what did he say to you?"

"He said that I was to look after you and baby AJ, I am the man of the house now, and I will protect you both"

"Baby AJ?" Lily has a slight smile at her son's nickname for Ava-Jane.

"He said her name, but it's too long, I call her AJ" Xavier says with a confidence that belies his young age "he also said that the big Alpha is my father too. He says I have two fathers"

Lily is stunned; she is not sure what to say "He told you that? Did he say why you have two fathers?"

"He said I'm special, so I was granted two fathers by the goddess, him and the big Alpha. He said he will watch over us from the moon, and papa Alpha will take care of us from now on. Papa said we will meet again in the moon, but that won't be for a long time, because I have to stay here and help papa Alpha protect you and AJ"

"Oh, my darling boy! You are such a blessing, you and AJ are going to mend mama's broken heart. I love you so much" she reaches over and hugs Xavier. The two of them snuggle into Atlas's body, one on each side, holding hands across his chest, as they drift off to sleep.

Morning light streams in through the blinds of Caden's hospital room. He wakes slowly, he is still very weak, but he feels considerably better this morning. When they drew a pint of blood last evening, he felt he was most likely not going to make it through the night, that his time was finally up. Realising just now the nurse never came back, to draw more blood for Atlas. Why?

He looks down at his chest, at this tiny baby clinging to his pinky finger. His heart swells, he knows she is not his biological daughter, but he feels like she belongs to him and they he belongs to her. His wolf feels it too; he has already decided she is their pup and he will kill anything and anyone that would harm her.

Dr Kent and the nurse walk into the room "how are you feeling this morning, Alpha Knight?" inquires the old doctor

"I'm actually feeling a little better today. I was expecting more blood to be drawn from me overnight. Why was no blood taken?"

Dr Kent and the nurse shoot each other a look "I'm sorry to inform you that Alpha Atlas passed away last night, so there was no need to take any further blood donations for him" replies Dr Kent.

Atlas passed away?! No, it can't be! What of Lily and Xavier?

"Where is Lily and Xavier?" Caden's only thoughts are how to comfort them.

"They are lying in wake with Alpha Atlas, in his room"

"Where is Caspian?! Why did he not draw more blood from me to save Alpha Atlas?! Caden is beginning to feel anger and sorrow. He knows Lily would prefer it was him ascending to the moon, not Atlas. Caspian should have respected her wishes.
