Chapter 76 - She's so tiny

Caden stirs, he can hear beeping and footsteps running, and people yelling "code blue!" What is code blue? His wolf is restless, something is wrong. He slowly opens his eyes to see Caspian enter his room.

"Alpha Knight, are you awake? I need to speak with you urgently" says Caspian as he begins hooking up tubes to his port, in preparation for another blood donation "Luna lily has gone into premature labour, we fear she is haemorrhaging. We need to draw more blueblood, to stem her blood loss, and the baby..." Caspian pauses

"What about the baby?!" Caden is struggling to regain consciousness

"The baby...may not survive.  At only six months, the baby will be extremely premature or as we call it a micro-preemie. There will be major medical challenges with breathing, heart, brain, infection risks, and of course issues with temperature and feeding. Under normal circumstances, we wouldn't even try to save a shifter pup born this premature.  As you are aware, we cannot administer any human medication to the pup, and it would be futile to try to keep a micro preemie pup alive without medical intervention. However, in this case, with your blueblood...we could save the pup...but there is something you need to be aware of..."

"What is it? Do whatever it takes to save Lily and the pup! Draw as much blood as you need, just save them!"

"It's not that simple, Lily will need more than one transfusion to survive, and the baby will need on-going transfusions, as well as Atlas. We're not sure you can sustain that kind of blood loss. This is very big risk to undertake" explains Caspian.

"Do whatever you need to save them. Take every last drop of my blood if you must. They need to live; they are my redemption. It's my honour to meet the goddess, so Lily can have the life she always deserved" Caden pushes his arm towards Caspian, urging him to withdraw the blood.

"There is another factor, which we are still unsure about, it's regarding your bond. I've been told you rejected Lily, and she accepted the rejection, which damaged the bond severely. But the bond is not completely severed, the bond is still there, albeit very faint. Once we complete the blood transfusion, we believe the bond will be completely repaired, it will be as those the rejection never took place. Do we have your permission to give her a transfusion, knowing this could be the outcome?"

Caden stills at what Caspian is saying the bond will be repaired? She could become my mate again? But she has Atlas now, she may not want me? "If it were up to me, I would give every last drop of my blood to Lily, without question. But regarding the bond...I don't know...this should be Lily's decision, not mine. She has a new mate now; can she not be the one to decide?"

Caspian takes a deep breath "Lily is not in any condition to make any decisions at the moment; she is fighting for her and her pup's life right now. That brings me to another issue, it's about the pup"

"What about the pup?!"

"We believe, once we administer the blueblood transfusion to the pup, you will be bonded for life. It will be as though you took a blood oath. Apart from a mating declaration, a blood oath is the most sacred oath a shifter can take. You will always be bonded to the pup, and the pup will feel the same bond to you. This is a massive responsibility.  Do you give your consent to the transfusion, knowing you will be bonded to a pup, that is not yours, for life?"

Lily wakes slowly, fighting a grogginess for consciousness. She is cold, stiff, and her throat is dry. She doesn't need full use of her faculties to know her baby is no longer in her womb. The baby? Did I lose the baby?

She tries to calm herself and she focuses on the bond, she can feel the connection to her newborn, her baby is alive and is sleeping soundly. She releases a sigh of relief. Then suddenly she feels another bond, strong and pulsing, this bond is to Caden. How can it be?

The pull of the bond is stronger than she could have imagined; she feels the need to follow the thread. On wobbly legs she gets out of bed and slides her feet into the hospital slippers and wraps a robe around her. She walks slowly, breathing through the abdominal pain, arriving at Caden's room. Pushing open the door, her heart stills at what she sees.

Caden has his shirt off, and an impossibly tiny newborn baby girl is lying on his chest, skin to skin. Caden's massive hand is covering her tiny back, like a blanket keeping her warm. She has her tiny hand wrapped around his pinky finger, clutching onto it like a lifeline. She sees an IV type tube, inserted into her tiny baby arm, she is receiving small amounts of blueblood, being drip fed into her tiny veins. Xavier is curled up at the foot of the bed, Lily is not surprised to see him here, he is protecting his baby sister. The three of them are sound asleep.

Lily creeps closer to the bed, to get a better look at her newborn pup. She is so tiny, how is she even alive? Lily knows that premature shifter babies rarely survive. She glances at the blueblood IV, and she knows it's Caden keeping her baby alive. Lily hesitantly reaches out to touch her baby but then pulls her hand back at the last minute. She is scared to touch her, she feels overwhelmed, anxious and exhausted I did this, it's my fault she almost died. I should have been stronger, kept her to full term, I am a bad mother. Looking at the three of them lying on the bed, she's feels disconnected from them, like an outsider looking in.

Lily backs away from the bed and cracks the door open. She's about to exit when she hears voices talking, she stills her hand on the doorknob and listens through the crack.

"How is he still alive...he has had so much blood drawn?" asks Jaxon

"We believe it's the bond; it has given Alpha Knight some renewed energy. In a way it has brought him back from the brink of death" replies Caspian

"Well, that's amazing! Does that mean his blood will regenerate and he can give transfusions to Lily, the baby and Atlas?"

Caspian sighs "the bond did save him, but it is only temporary. We have already drawn too much blood, and because of that, Alpha Knight's injuries are not healing as they should. We believe he could sustain Lily and the baby, but if we continue the transfusions to Atlas he will most likely die. Unfortunately, Alpha Atlas is deteriorating, and therefore his demand for blueblood is increasing. We are having to increase the amount blueblood we draw each time, which is slowly killing Alpha Knight".

"How long do we have?" asks Jaxon in alarm

"We're not entirely sure, but at this rate, I would hazard a guess at another 24 to 48 hours until Alpha Knight succumbs".

"This is not acceptable! We need to pull the plug on Alpha Atlas now. It is imperative that Caden and the baby survive!" demands Jaxon

"That decision is not ours to make. Luna Lily is the only person authorised to make those decisions. Alpha Knight was clear to me, prior to doing the transfusions, that I am only to take commands from Luna Lily, when it comes to making medical decisions for the three of them. She has been granted full Luna rights of Mystic Falls pack, she is entirely in charge now".
