The lake stretched out before them, black and still, a glassy expanse beneath the waning light of the moon. The cabin, an old but well-maintained family retreat, sat perched on the edge of the water like a silent sentinel. Its weathered wood seemed to hum with history, the sort of place where memories were etched into every creak of the floorboards.
Y/N stood on the porch, leaning against the railing, watching the group unload the car. Trent, his younger brother, was already barking orders, his overconfidence grating as always. Behind him, their friends laughed and teased, hauling coolers and bags into the cabin. Bree lingered at the edge of the group, a little apart, her delicate features illuminated by the glow of the porch light. Y/N couldn't help but glance at her, his heart thudding a little harder every time she tucked her hair behind her ear or laughed softly at someone's joke.
When his father had handed him the keys to the cabin with a stern reminder to keep Trent in line, Y/N hadn't hesitated to accept. He'd always loved this place, but it wasn't just nostalgia pulling him here tonight. When Trent had mentioned Bree was coming along, Y/N found himself eagerly agreeing to supervise. Bree was magnetic—confident yet soft-spoken, with a wit that cut through the usual noise of their group. He'd always admired her from a distance, but tonight, the proximity felt different. Closer. More charged.
The evening unfolded in typical fashion. Laughter and the clink of beer bottles filled the air as the group settled into the cosy living room. A fire crackled in the stone fireplace, casting long, flickering shadows on the walls. Someone suggested scary stories—a staple of nights like these. Y/N didn't protest; he'd heard them all before, but he enjoyed watching the others squirm, especially Trent, who always pretended he wasn't scared until the stories grew too vivid.
"Alright, who's going first?" Trent asked, leaning back in the overstuffed chair he'd claimed as his throne.
"Bree should go," someone suggested with a mischievous grin. "Ladies first."
Bree rolled her eyes but smiled. "Fine," she said, pulling her legs up onto the couch where she sat beside Y/N. "But don't blame me if you can't sleep later."
Her story was surprisingly chilling, a tale about a girl who disappeared at a summer camp not far from here, her ghost supposedly still haunting the woods. As Bree's voice lowered, her tone becoming more ominous, Y/N noticed her glancing at him, as if gauging his reaction. He gave her a small smile, trying to mask how much he enjoyed her presence so close to him.
When her story ended, the group erupted in nervous laughter, a palpable tension in the room. One by one, others chimed in with their own tales, each more elaborate and grotesque than the last. Bree shifted closer to Y/N as the stories grew darker, her shoulder brushing against his arm. By the time Trent shared a particularly gruesome tale about a deranged killer stalking the lake, Bree was practically leaning into Y/N. He could feel the warmth of her body, her subtle, nervous breaths against his side.
"You okay?" he whispered, glancing down at her. His voice was soft, meant only for her.
She nodded quickly but didn't move away. "I'm fine. Just..." Her eyes darted to the dark windows. "This place is kinda creepy, isn't it?"
Y/N chuckled. "A little. But it's safe. I promise."
She smiled at him, a little sheepishly, and he felt his heart skip. He wanted to reach out, to place a reassuring hand on hers, but the group was still watching, oblivious to the quiet moment unfolding between them.

As the night wore on, someone suggested exploring the woods, fueled by a mix of liquid courage and the lingering thrill of the stories. Trent immediately agreed, rounding up the others. Y/N hesitated, watching as Bree visibly tensed at the suggestion.
