The hospital's fluorescent lights buzzed faintly overhead as Y/N finished washing her hands after her final surgery of the day. It had been a gruelling 14-hour shift—a double bypass in the morning, followed by two emergency appendectomies back-to-back. She stretched her shoulders and let out a deep sigh of exhaustion, her thoughts already drifting to the cosy warmth of her apartment and maybe a reheated meal from the freezer. But as she walked out of the staff lounge, a familiar figure caught her eye.
Standing near the entrance, looking effortlessly chic in a black trench coat and boots, was Dana. She had her arms crossed and was leaning casually against the wall, her auburn hair catching the dim light. The sight of her instantly made Y/N's heart skip a beat. Dana straightened up as soon as their eyes met, her face breaking into a warm smile.
"Well, well, look who's still saving lives," Dana teased, walking toward her with an air of playful confidence. "If I didn't know better, I'd think you like staying here more than spending time with me."
Y/N chuckled, her fatigue momentarily forgotten. "Dana, what are you doing here? You didn't have to come all the way—"
"Correction," Dana interrupted, holding up a finger. "I wanted to come all the way. And for the record, I'm kidnapping you for dinner. No arguments."
Before Y/N could protest, Dana held up a takeout coffee cup with a knowing look. "Double shot, extra foam, and a sprinkle of cinnamon. I figured you'd need a pick-me-up."
Y/N laughed and accepted the cup gratefully, taking a sip. "Okay, you win. What's the plan?"
Dana's grin widened. "It's a surprise. But trust me, you'll love it."
Dana led Y/N to her car, opening the passenger door with a dramatic flourish. "Your chariot awaits, Dr. Y/N."
"Oh, thank you, my lady," Y/N replied with a smirk, climbing in. Dana shut the door behind her before jogging around to the driver's seat. Once they were buckled in, Dana turned on her playlist—a mix of soft indie tunes and romantic ballads—and pulled out onto the quiet evening streets.
"So," Dana began, glancing over at Y/N. "Rough day?"
"You could say that," Y/N replied, leaning back against the seat and closing her eyes briefly. "The first surgery was smooth, but the emergency cases... those always keep you on your toes."
Dana's voice softened. "Tell me about them. What happened?"
Y/N hesitated. Most people didn't ask about her work beyond a polite "How was your day?" But Dana wasn't most people. She genuinely wanted to know, and Y/N could see the curiosity in her eyes.
"Well," Y/N began, "there was this teenager who came in with appendicitis. It was really severe—his appendix was already starting to rupture. We had to get him into surgery fast."
Dana's brows furrowed in concern. "Oh my God. Was he okay?"
"Yeah," Y/N assured her. "We got it out just in time. He'll be sore for a while, but he's going to be fine."
Dana let out a breath. "That's amazing, Y/N. You're amazing."
Y/N felt her cheeks heat up. "I just do what needs to be done."
Dana reached over, briefly squeezing Y/N's hand. "What you do is more than that. You save people's lives. I can't even imagine the kind of pressure you're under every day."
Y/N glanced at her, touched by the sincerity in her voice. "Thanks, Dana. That means a lot."

Twenty minutes later, Dana pulled into a small, secluded parking lot. Y/N craned her neck to look around. It was a cosy, candle-lit bistro nestled on the edge of a park, its soft glow spilling out into the dark night. Through the windows, Y/N could see tables adorned with fresh flowers and couples chatting over glasses of wine.
