The ocean lapped persistently at the soft sands of the beach, the tide was high on this night of a full moon. You felt the change underfoot as you stepped out of the grassy forest onto the soft yellow sands that turned silver under the grace of the moonlight.

You sunk just slightly into the sand as you walked, the soft earth struggling to support you the same way the firm dirt would. You didn't live too far from this secret cove of yours, so on nights like these, where you couldn't sleep, the sea was your perfect and most dear lullaby.

The night sky was clear, the stars reflecting across the surface as you stepped into the water and took a deep breath of the breeze that blew past your ears and through your hair. It was salty, but in its own way, comforting.

You could fall asleep if you closed your eyes for long enough..

On the flip side, lingering within the shallows of the cove was a certain blonde merfolk, his eyes traversing across the reef and its beautiful coral he would use to make paint. His scales a beautiful gold that faded to a royal and elegant blue that suited as good camouflage within the waters.

He himself looked like a peace of coral as he examined them, his body swaying with the push and pull of the sea. That is until he noticed a shadow on the beach, swimming towards the jagged rocks that sheltered the cove and reef to investigate.

He could barely see her figure from this distance, and his curiosity about humans only seemed to get the best of him as he dived back underwater and slowly swam towards the beach.

You had sat down in the water, lazily digging through the sand in search of pretty shells, unaware of the silent observer watching from the side. Had it been daytime, the sun would certainly catch his shiny scales and give him away..but it was safe to get close, wasn't it?

He tilted his head before looking around the shallows and spotting a shell that had yet to be washed up onto the beach, it was smoothed over from the sands and shiny from the sea water. He looked back at the figure sitting in the water, looking back at the shell, before swimming a little closer.

The surface just barely managed to conceal him as he pushed the shell into her reach, before quickly backing up and watching her reaction. His aquamarine eyes watched with keen interest, it seemed the coral was of no importance to him now compared to what was before him now.

Your hard narrowly brushed over the smooth shell, perking up and gently clasping it and pulling it from its sandy grave. "woah.." you murmured to yourself, holding it up to the sky and smiling as it caught the gleam of the moon above.

Though, perhaps that wasn't good news for the merfolk a few feet away from you.

The gleam just managed to reach his golden scales, and you would have to be blind to have missed the glint it created. You mistook it for another shell until you narrowed your eyes and looked closer.
