It had all been going so well, it really was. Despite the blindness the ocean brought upon him, Thane managed to pull through. He owed his safety to Via and Lissen. It would have been impossible without them. They had caught the final two guards by surprise, and Lissen had taken care of them.
"Up ahead," Via instructed. I sense no water pressure." Thane and Lissen swam forward. "Swim upwards, " Via instructed, and the two heeded the advice. Just as Via had said, Thane had breached the surface, and sudden sensory overload attacked him as his optic implants finally came back online.
After a moment, Thane's eyes adjusted and he looked around. Silver pillars held the room in place. Via scanned the rocks. "This structure dates back to at least a few centuries. It is a miracle the ocean hasn't eroded it." Via informed him. Thane really didn't care. "Yeah, let's just stop Vanta and get out of here. Via, call the others." A few moments later, Ferrix answered. "Thane, what is it?" The man asked in concern. "The path is clear. You can come now, and hurry, I think you might want to see this." He told them. "Got it," Ferrix replied. "We're on our way. Stay put and wait for us." Thane nodded and disconnected the call.
About ten minutes later, Thane heard the soft hum of an engine coming from the water, and then the spherical shape of the submarine poked itself from the surface. Ferrix and the rest of Thane's friends got off one at a time. Embit quickly hopped off Lucy's shoulder and leaped into Thane's arms, and the boy embraced his partner back. Lucas ran up to Lissen and hugged his Loomian. "You did good."
Meanwhile, the others looked around the large room in silent awe. It was old, but still standing, and would probably remain long after they were all well and gone. "What is this place?" Mabel asked as she gripped Jake's arm and looked around. Lucy walked up to a wall and carefully ran her hand against the stone. "This place is old. Really old." She looked around and then back to her friends. "Hey, how come this place hasn't eroded away yet?" She wondered aloud. Jake nodded. "Yeah, the ocean should have destroyed this place a long time ago." He turned to Mr. Ferrix and crossed his arms. "I'm guessing this isn't a normal structure." The man shook his head. "Not in the slightest."
Lucas suddenly pointed above. "Guys, look!" Everyone looked up. In the ceiling, there were giant square glass panes with water on the other side. They were see-through. Wait, no, there was nothing there. The water was suspended in mid-air. Mabel looked at them with suspicion. "There's no glass." She realized. "How is the water doing that?" She looked around and then back to the way they had come from. "How is there air down here anyway?"
"The people who built these structures had advanced technology. Technology that was even more advanced than our own." Ferrix spoke with reverence. "It's almost like magic." Lucas looked at him with worry. "So that means, whatever Vanta is looking for down here is super powerful?" Ferrix nodded gravely. "I have an idea of what that man could want from here, and we have to stop him from getting it. To at the very least preserve this place." Ferrix took the lead. "Let's move, but be on your guard."
The others took up positions behind him. Lucas released his other Loomians, Burroach, and Kabunga. Lucy released Phancub, Ragoon, Whimpor, and Vari. Thane released his smaller team members, Geklow and Whispup, whose green flame burned brighter than ever, but Thane was ready to recall the rookie the moment things got out of hand. Starla clung to Mabel tightly.
The group moved from the room and into a large hallway made of stone. It was a long hallway with a corner turning left. As they got closer, Thane suddenly stopped, forcing everyone else to stop as well. "Two guards just around the corner. No Loomians." He turned to his friends. "I have an idea."
The newest hire, a rookie guard named Isaac shifted nervously from foot to foot. He knew that he wouldn't see any action down here under the ocean, but he was still nervous. The older guards saw his partner's nervousness and spoke up. "Relax. We're the only people down here. This is an easy paycheck." Just as he said that, two vines wrapped around his ankles. "What the-" He started before he was thrown off balance with a yell. Escagrow then toppled the man over, causing him to fall into the water below.
