"Why won't you talk to me?"
Kai picked at his fingernails while sitting on his metal cell bed. Clippings fell onto the thin white blanket. Bit by bit, white receeded to pink until he was on his very last finger. When Yeonjun asked him again, he started ripping more off until his pinky bled.
"Hey! Stop that!" Yeonjun grabbed the taller's wrists to restrain them in his own. He was met with resistance. The last thing he wanted to do was hurt him further so he calmly let go. "You done?"
Kai stared at the growing red rim around his nail bed. It stung a little but he didn't show it. One drop of red fell onto his pants. The rest he wiped off. After it finally stopped bleeding, he mumbled "leave me alone before I hurt you."
"For the last fucking time... you can't hurt me! You literally watched Soobin bite a piece of my arm off and I was fine!"
"You weren't fine." Kai glared directly into the older's eyes with a scowl. "You were in pain. I saw THAT."
"But-"
"-I don't care that you healed from it and honestly, I don't understand or care about what point you're trying to prove. I don't want to hurt you so get the fuck out of my room!"
"Just answer my question!"
"Ugh. Why does it matter?!" Kai stood up from his bed in a fury, only to find his left wrist locked in Yeonjun's grip. "What the fuck is wrong with you?!"
"You CANNOT hurt me. Get that through your fucking skull!"
"I'M THE ONLY PERSON IN HERE WHO CAN KILL YOU! I'M DANGEROUS! I'M IN THIS SHITHOLE BECAUSE I'VE KILLED SOMEONE BEFORE! GOT IT?!"
Yeonjun didn't let go. He wasn't told anything he didn't already know. With conviction in his eyes, he waited for the younger to realize he wasn't going anywhere.
Kai sunk back down onto his bed then threw his head back against the wall. The lights above were blinding. Closing his eyes made his own pain worse when flashbacks of his ex creeped out from repressed memories. Though he tried, he never forgot the day he accidentally killed him.
Yeonjun ran his thumb over the outside of the younger's palm. His tone then softened along with his grip when the broken beauty finally looked at him. "I know you can kill me but-"
Kai scoffed in belief he was being bullshitted again.
"-I also know that you won't."
"Uh huh. And why's that?"
"Because I'm still here aren't I? And I know you've thought about it because I'm annoying as hell!" Yeonjun grinned from ear to ear when he saw the younger giggle to himself.
"You really are."
"Not as bad as Beomgyu and Soobin though! If I have to hear them argue again then please kill me immediately."
"Yeonjun!"
"I'm serious! I can't take another argument between them! It's always about stupid shit too! I've only been here for like a month and I can't stand it!"
Kai was dying of laughter while Yeonjun complained some more about their life in prison. He then learned they had a lot in common when they started comparing their childhoods.
Both grew up well loved within their community. Both discovered their powers at the age of 16 by accident and both flourished in local fame afterwards.
The biggest difference was one of them was celebrated for their gifts whereas the other was on the run.
Yeonjun cringed back into his corner of the bed when Kai told him his story.
"I still don't know how it happened. I just lost my temper and suddenly my ex froze into a marble statue. I tried, I really fucking tried to bring him back but I couldn't."
"What happened to the statue?"
"It broke when I accidentally bumped into it. I left it by the river then ran to the police station. No one believed me. They just laughed and told them I was wasting their time. I burried him afterwards but last I heard, the government dug him up so they could run some experiments. Honestly wouldn't be surprised if he was ash by now."
"Why did you run?" Yeonjun regretted asking when Kai started to pick at his nails again. A second one bled before he could stop it. "Hey. You don't have to tell me."
"I um... I ran because everyone in my city wanted me dead. The police couldn't hold me because there wasn't proof that I killed him even though I literally told them I did. I didn't want to go. I begged them to put me in jail but they wouldn't. After my family was harassed, I knew I had to go. The feds found me shortly after and now, here I am."
"You've been in here since you were 17?"
Kai nodded.
"I'm sorry..."
"It's fine. Not your fault."
"Not yours either."
"Why are you still in here Yeonjun? There are so many better ways to make money than doing this to yourself."
"Because..."
Kai's stomach bunched into a tight knot when the older reached for his hand again. His lungs then drained of air when their fingers intertwined. "Yeonjun..."
"You asked."
"Yeonjun stop."
"You're the only reason I'm still here."
"We're not talking about this again!"
"We don't have to! At least admit you like me too because I know you do!" Yeonjun rapidly grabbed Kai's second hand to keep him from hurting himself. He could see how scared he was. They both were but nothing was going to stop Yeonjun from trying. With force, he yanked the younger forward until they were sitting merely a breath away. "Admit it."
"Nothing will ever happen between us..."
"Admit it."
"Fine. I-" Kai froze when he was interrupted with a kiss. His eyes popped open while his heart nearly stopped. At the same time, he felt like he wanted to explode into a thousand pieces because for once since he's been in prison, he didn't feel alone.
"-I like you too." Yeonjun couldn't keep the smile off of his face when he saw how speechless the younger was. He bit his bottom lip then teased "kiss me again."
Kai curled his fingers around Yeonjun's cheek and held him closely. "You're not worried? Even a little?"
"No. Just kiss me again."
"You're so fucking annoying."
"I know." Yeonjun grinned when their lips met for the second time. A second turned into a minute. That minute confirmed everything he already knew the very first day he saw him walking down the hall. Being here was never a mistake. Leaving would've been.
Kai nearly gasped when he pulled away. His hand still laid on Yeonjun's cheek so he could feel him for a second longer. "You're so cute."
"You too."
"You ready to tell everyone?"
The lunch hour rang. Yeonjun watched Taehyun and Beomgyu line up in the cafeteria along with the others. As usual, Soobin was the last in line. The thought of telling them made him intensely excited. They all told him he never had a chance. Now with Kai by his side, he could proudly show off that he did.
