Time was ticking.
It was about to be midnight.
The stars were scattered above like pearls spilled across velvet, the night surprisingly quiet.
The two of them sat beneath a cherry blossom tree, hidden away in an open field, far from the noise of the spring festival.
The world behind them was alive with celebration... music, laughter, the occasional firecracker pop.
But here? Here, it was just them.
Sanemi and Giyuu.
Soft petals floated down like snow, brushing through Giyuu's dark hair as he leaned gently on Sanemi's shoulder.
Sanemi glanced down at him, his heart melting into a puddle of everything he'd been holding inside.
The ring in his pouch? Felt like it weighed a thousand emotions.
They didn't speak at first. They didn't need to. The warmth of their fingers laced together said more than words ever could.
But Sanemi was nervous. God, was he nervous.
His heart beat so loud it echoed in his ears. He'd practiced a dozen versions of what to say. But now, none of them felt right.
So he looked at Giyuu, who had his face tilted toward the sky, the soft glow of the lanterns from afar glimmered in his gentle eyes.
Giyuu looked so calm, so perfect.
And it made Sanemi's heart ache in the way only love can.
Sanemi's hands were sweating.
God, why now?
...
He somehow managed to control himself, shifting slightly. He could hear faint noises of the fair in the distance, and he knew it was about to be midnight soon.
"...Hey,"
Sanemi said softly.
Giyuu turned to him.
"Hm?"
Sanemi rubbed his thumb against his palm, unsure of where to even start.
"You ever think about how we got here?"
Giyuu tilted his head.
"You knocked on my door and then we walked to the festival together..."
Sanemi snorted.
"No, idiot. I mean, in life. Us."
Giyuu blinked slowly, turning his head to look at the sky quietly.
"...I think about it more than I should, honestly..."
He paused, then muttered softly.
"But if I admit that, you'll call me a sap."
Sanemi smiled, slowly.
"You are a sap. The quietest, most dramatic little sap I've ever known."
Giyuu looked away, cheeks faintly pink.
"You're the one bringing up fate at midnight under a tree."
...
Sanemi paused.
"...Fair."
He sighed and looked down, squeezing Giyuu's hand gently.
And then, all at once, he began to speak.
"Y'know... It's pretty crazy to think of how much we really changed, right?"
Giyuu turned to him again, nodding very slowly.
"You were really different back then..."
Sanemi's gaze shifted from their intertwined hands to Giyuu's eyes, his heart racing a little.
"Well, I didn't think I was ever gonna fall in love."
