The effect was immediate. There was a flicker of something in Nathan's eyes, not smugness exactly, but close—like a spark of victory. His lips curled into the tiniest, sly smile, the kind you'd miss if you blinked. He didn't say a word, but his silence screamed, Gotcha.
Keith, on the other hand, let out a dramatic gasp. "Rose... betrayed by my eternal love? How cruel!" He staggered back like he'd been stabbed straight through the heart.
I just rolled my eyes and started walking before this circus turned into a full opera.
Kate's eyes went wide at Keith's comment, and she practically choked on air.
"Kate, why do you always stick with me? Can't you sometimes be thoughtful?" Keith said with his signature dramatic flair, hands clasped over his chest. "I know no one can resist having a crush on me, but darling... you have no chance. You're like a man in a dress to me."
"Eww, you wish," Kate snapped back, flicking her hair like she was swatting a fly.
Keith grinned devilishly, stepping back with a bow. "Bye, Rose. This George will surely find his way back to you when destiny wishes," he said, voice dripping with playful arrogance like he was quoting a bad romance novel.
Before I could even roll my eyes at him, Nathan's hand tangled in my hair, yanking me forward like I was some disobedient puppy. Only difference? My hair was the leash.
"Ow! Nathan! I can walk on my own, you know," I hissed, stumbling to keep up as he dragged me out of Keith's and Kate's chaos.
He didn't even look back, his grip loosening only a little. "Then walk faster," he muttered, and somehow it was more like a command than a suggestion.
Behind us, Keith called out dramatically, "She's mine, Rose! My eternal love will save you from that barbarian one day!"
Kate just facepalmed so hard I swear the sound echoed through the hall.
We started combing through the entire ground floor like detectives on a case we didn't sign up for. Tables, chairs, and more tables. Not a single door, no hidden passage, no storage closets—nothing. The only option that came to mind was hiding under the tables, but even in my panic I knew that was way too obvious.
Nathan and I didn't exchange a single word as we searched. It felt like we were two lost kids wandering around an empty carnival after closing time. Honestly, the silence was starting to eat at me. Boring didn't even begin to cover it.
Nathan, on the other hand, moved like he was in a crime documentary—checking under every chair, scanning corners like a hawk. He wasn't just searching; he was hunting. His eyes darted, his fingers brushed along walls, and he crouched low like he was expecting to find something no one else could see.
"Let's move to the first floor," I say, trying to sound authoritative for a change.
We step into the elevator, its golden walls gleaming under the dim lights, buttons shining like little stars. I notice something new—the elevator opens on both sides. Each door leads to a different hallway, stretching in opposite directions. A small detail, but already my brain starts racing with "what ifs."
The first floor is dimly lit, shadows stretching across the walls like long fingers. My eyes are immediately drawn to the old portraits hanging along the corridor. Who were these people? Their eyes seem to follow every movement, adding an eerie weight to the already quiet floor.
There are countless bedrooms and guest rooms lining the hallways, all closed—but none have locks. Every door looks like an invitation to explore, yet a chill crawls up my spine. This place isn't just big; it feels alive, as if it's watching us move, waiting for someone to make a wrong step.
Nathan moves ahead silently, scanning the hall with those sharp, calculating eyes of his. I can't tell if he's genuinely cautious or if he's secretly practicing his mafia skills. Either way, following him feels like walking a tightrope, one misstep and... well, I don't even want to imagine.
Again Nathan being Nathan is searching every nook and corner like we can hide inside a vase?I am controlling myself in not doubting this person but he keeps on adding the suspicion.
