You heard the news before most and you hated to admit it but you were shocked something like this hadn't happen sooner.

Aitana had broken her fibula and in training nevertheless.

It wasn't your girlfriend who called you, no she's too thoughtful. Alexia texted you two words.

SOS. AITANA.

Not thirty seconds later the Barcelona captain's name appeared on your screen. You answered it, let her explain and then walked out of your own international camp. Lea and Klara asked where you were going but you didn't have time. You simply apologise and said you'll text them from the airport.

"Airport? What are you talking about? We have training in 30 minutes" you left your teammates in pure confusion. The news would be out soon and those who knew you best would know that there wasn't a chance you were staying in Germany.

You wish the flight time was quicker or at least felt like the actually length, not double.

As discussed, Alexia met you in the reception of the Las Rojas compound. It felt like you were committing some kind of crime. Spain were the enemy, the team standing in the way of you winning a trophy with your national team. Truth be told you weren't even sure if you were allowed to be there.

"Put your hood up and if anyone asks I'm saying your Alba"

You both looked at each other before laughing. No way could you pass for Alexia's younger sister but you do as she said and put your hood up.

Several players look your way but say nothing. You keep your head down, only looking up when you see you're about to walk into someone. The single trainer and two crutches give away who it is.

"Careful" her voice sounded dejected.

"Shouldn't I be the one telling you that?"

Upon seeing your face, Aitana's lit up in response. She swung her arms around you knowing full well that you'll take her weight. Alexia mumbles something before giving you two some privacy.

"Tell me who I need to kill and I will" it was a joke. Aitana knew it was but the look in your eyes held a tiny bit of truth.

"No one. I land badly"

Of course she blamed herself. She was in so deep that she didn't realise it could have been the environment that caused this.

"Aitana, listen to me. Breaking your leg in training isn't normal. No training sessions should be played with a level of intensity where this could happen"

Aitana shook her head ever so slightly. She was either agreeing with you or asking you to stop talking about it. Given that the latter was a chance you drop it.

The two of you stand there for a few minutes. Aitana lets you hold her as her walls come down. You don't speak, you only listen as she tells you about her insecurities and fears for the surgery.

"I don't like hospitals. People go there to die" it took everything in you not to chuckle at your girlfriends dramatics.

"It's also the place where life begins. Try to think of it that way. The surgery is a set back and the start of a new chapter, a new challenge and you will come back stronger"

Aitana listens to your words and lets them sink in. She'd seen teammates go through surgery and comeback but she's also seen the toll it takes physically and mentally. One thought that kept running through her mind is whether or not she can overcome this. She couldn't help but wonder if this is it and her best years are behind her.

"I'm scared"

"I know baby, I know"

You watch her bottom lip tremble as she fights back tears. When a couple do fall you make sure to wipe them gently. Not once do you tell her not to cry because if crying is what Aitana needs then you'll create a space for her to do just that.
