Where the Light Settles
The chaotic, deafening roar of the active delivery room had long since dissolved.
Sometime during the blur of transfer, she had been moved to the quiet, muted hush of her own private post-partum room.
The sharp, panic-laced orders of the medical staff, the clatter of emergency trays, and the terrifying shriek of the flatline had all melted away, replaced by something infinitely softer, something sacred and fragile.
The soft ambient lighting overhead seemed gentle, receding into the background as the reality of the room settled back into focus.
Slowly, agonizingly, the heavy, suffocating grayness that had swallowed Aen's vision began to lift, peeling back layer by heavy layer.
Her eyelids fluttered, feeling like they were coated in lead, before parting just a fraction against the harsh glare.
The sterile smell of antiseptic still hung thick in the air, mixed with the faint, comforting scent of clean cotton linen, rain from the evening outside, and the earthy musk of Yoongi's jacket draped over a chair nearby.
But long before her eyes could focus, her senses registered the one thing that mattered above all else.
Warmth.
A fierce, white-knuckled pressure wrapped around her hand, holding onto her skin with a desperate, crushing grip-as if letting go for even a single second meant she would slip away back into the dark.
Aen swallowed past a throat as dry as sandpaper, her lips parting on a shallow, trembling breath that felt foreign in her chest.
"...Yoon?" she whispered, her voice barely a rasping scrape of sound, hardly more than a ghost of a breath.
The grip on her hand tightened so violently it almost hurt, the bones pressing together, but to Aen, it felt like an anchor dragging her safely back to shore.
It was the only thing keeping her tethered to the earth.
"I'm right here. I've got you. I'm right here, Aen-ah," Yoongi's voice broke, thick and raw, carrying the ragged, splintered edges of a man who had stared into the absolute abyss and refused to look away.
As her vision finally sharpened, the sight of him stole whatever breath she had left.
Yoongi was sitting slumped in the chair pulled hard against the hospital bed, his forehead pressed against the knuckles of her hand.
The stark, bone-deep exhaustion was carved deep into the lines of his face, dark shadows bruised beneath his bloodshot eyes, and his usually neat hair wildly disheveled from where his hands had torn through it over and over during the hours of terror.
But the moment those dark eyes locked onto hers, it was with a fierce, blinding intensity that made her chest ache.
He looked like a man who had been shattered into a thousand pieces and miraculously put back together by sheer willpower alone.
Every breath he took looked heavy, as if the realization that she was actually breathing was something he still had to prove to himself.
Without a word, Yoongi reached up with his free hand, his palm trembling so violently it took two tries to steady it against her cheek.
His thumb swept gently, reverently across her skin, catching the lingering moisture of tears she hadn't realized she was shedding.
"You came back," he choked out, a wet, broken laugh slipping past his lips as a fresh tear spilled over his lashes, tracking down his hollow cheek.
"God, Yeobo... you came back to me. I was so scared. I thought... I actually thought you were going to leave me."
"I'm sorry, Yeobo," Aen murmured, her hand shifting slightly to catch his fingers, her thumb rubbing over his knuckles.
"I didn't mean to scare you. I'm here. I'm not going anywhere without you."
Without breaking eye contact, as if looking away even for a second would cause her to dissolve, Yoongi shifted.
He carefully leaned over the edge of the mattress, sliding closer until his forehead pressed gently against hers.
The heat of his skin burned away the lingering cold of the nightmare.
He closed his eyes, inhaling a shaky, shuddering breath-a sound so full of released agony it made her heart twist-as he absorbed the reality of her pulse, the steady rise and fall of her chest, and the undeniable warmth of her breath mingling with his.
Beneath his closed eyelids, the phantom terror of the last hour still flashed like a slow-motion film: the sudden panic, the frantic alarms, the terrifying, agonizing seconds where the world had completely stopped spinning because her heart had.
He had felt the zero on his wrist turn to freezing ice, felt his own soul threatening to tear right down the middle.
It was a trauma carved straight into his marrow.
'Never again,' he fiercely, desperately vowed against her skin, the silent promise tearing through his chest like a prayer and an oath combined.
He would burn the world down before he ever let her walk to the edge of the dark like that again.
No more risks.
No more nearly losing her.
They stayed like that for a long, suspended moment.
Just breathing.
Just existing in the space where death had tried to claim them and failed.
"The baby..." Aen whispered after a heartbeat, her eyes searching his face, the fierce, instinctual pull of motherhood cutting through the lingering fog of exhaustion.
"Gi-an..." Yoongi supplied softly, a tender, broken smile touching his lips as he pulled back just enough to look deeply into her eyes.
"He's safe," Yoongi added instantly, reading the unspoken panic and the frantic maternal need in her expression before she could even form the words.
A choked, overwhelmed smile broke through the devastation on his face as he gently used his free hand to press softly against the warm, steady skin of her wrist.
The pulse there hummed against his fingertips, a living promise, blazing with a rich, unyielding warmth that perfectly mirrored the steady, healthy rhythm pulsing beneath his own skin.
The zero there-which is invisible to him-was now probably glowing just like his.
Slowly, Yoongi turned his head slightly toward the bassinet tucked safely beside the bed, where a small, quiet bundle was wrapped snugly in a soft, pale blue blanket.
"He's right there," Yoongi whispered, his voice trembling with a love so heavy it filled the entire room, pushing out the last remnants of the cold.
"Our boy is healthy. He's perfect. He's sleeping right beside us."
Aen followed his gaze, tears welling hot and fast in her eyes as the crushing, overwhelming weight of relief finally broke over her, lacing her fingers securely through Yoongi's, their grip locking together with absolute finality.
They had walked right up to the edge of the dark multiple times since the moment they met, weathering storms that should have broken them.
But this... this was the scariest of them all.
They had stared down the impossible and bled for it.
Yet, they had crossed back together.
Yoongi leaned down one more time, pressing his lips softly, lingeringly against her forehead, whispering words of fierce, unending devotion against her skin as the steady, rhythmic beep-beep of the monitor sang out its quiet promise of life.
The storm had finally passed.
And in the quiet warmth of the aftermath, they were still whole.
