I stared at the business card that Dr. Kim had given me as I sat by myself drinking tea outside on a beautiful iron patio set with thick red cushions. Fabian's backyard was huge, decorated with beautiful red rose bushes, perfectly trimmed hedges, and in the center there flowed large classic fountian. The lawn was a well manicured rich green and there was even a gazeboo by a large grilling area. Birds sang and butterflies visted the flowers. Several trees provided just the right shade so I could sit comfortably without my pale skin burning in the morning sun. I turned the card over and over in my hand as I recalled the conversation with Dr. Kim after Fabian left the hospital room.
"Ms. Williams, I want you to know that I have plenty of patients in this hospital with injuries similar to yours and they don't come from an accidental tumble down some stairs. While I do not want to worry you; I feel obligated to tell you this because of your amnesia condition makes you very vanderable. It's possible that you obtianed your injuries another way. "
I felt my brow furrow. "What do you mean by that sir?"
"I think that someone hit you and hit you hard, intentionally. You see if the cause of your head injuries had been a fall down a set of stairs you would have more injuries, bruises one the rest of your body. You have none except for the ones on your head. Who told you that you fell down the stairs?"
My eyes breifly looked at the closed door that Fabian had exited through. The doctor noticed and folded his arms infront of his body. "Ms. Williams, do you even remember that man?"
As I shook my head slowly the docter sighed and reached into his white coat pocket. Retriving a business card he handed it to me. " While I do not want to make assumptions about your life. I would feel responsible if something else happened to you and I didn't say anything. This is my business card with my contact information. If you are indeed a victim of domestic violence please call me. There are reasources available to get you to a safe place and I can get a hold of those for you. Normally I would give you that information directly but in case I am wrong about this I do not want to put you in an awkward position. If this card is found it will just be assumed that I gave it to you because I was your physican in this particular situation. Please be careful." He said his brown eyes grave.
I had taken the business card in a daze and put it in my pocket as my mind raced a million miles a minute. Now I just stared at the card as I read the doctors contact information on it. Interestingly enough the card was written in English on the front and Asian lettering on the back. It looked like the same lettering that was with my dragon tattoo.
"Up bright and early today?" I felt a hand on my shoulder;hiding the card in my fist I turned to see Fabian in the morning sun. He was well dressed in black modern suit and a white shirt. He walked over taking the seat acrossed from me setting down a cup of coffee infront of himself. "Hope you don't mind if I join you." He said flashing a handsome smile.
Pulling my hands from the table and into my lap I shook my head no. Being careful not to attract attention I secertly slid the card into my pants pocket. I then reached for my tea taking another sip as he took a drink from his own cup. He set it back down and then glanced about the yard breifly.
"It's such a nice day out this morning. That's why I love it here in California. Beautiful weather year round. So what would you like to do today? My entire schedule is clear."
"Well I was kinda wondering where my cell phone is. I would love to go through the contacts see if it would help jog my memory. Maybe call some people and talk to them."
He nodded. "Oh thank you for reminding me." He reached into his coat pocket pulling out a cell phone."You lost your phone a couple of days ago and we couldn't find it. I took it upon myself to get a new one for you." He slid the phone over the table to me his eyes never leaving mine. Once I reached for the phone his hand touched mine and I froze as his fingers litely caressed the back of my hand as he spoke. "Unfortunantly I don't know who was in the contact list in your old phone so I don't have any of their contact information." I finally came to my senses and snatched my hand back from his as if he had burned me. A pained look painted over his features as only the cell phone remained in his hand.
