Esme's POV
Yesterday, when Cali asked me if i regretted my attempt, i was shocked. She had never brought up either of our attempts, so it came out of nowhere. All night, the only thing going through my head was that maybe she regretted attempting suicide. Maybe she was the one that should be allowed visitors, and maybe the right to get out of the asylum someday, not me. She's more important than i am. She's happier than i am.
When i went into the cafeteria for the first time this morning, i knew that this new asylum "Eastern State Hospital" was going to be a living hell.
I walked in, and all eyes were on me. I started shaking and getting nervous. I absolutely hate it when people look at me. I walked as fast as i could and sat next to Cali.
"I'm guessing you're not a fan of attention." She said, handing me a piece of (stale) toast.
"Something like that." I whispered.
I felt a tap on my shoulder, so i turned around. It was Layla.
"Esme, Cali, I'm so sorry for what happened yesterday. I had no right to say what i did. I'm just as fucked up as you guys are, maybe even more. I don't know what came over me." she said, wringing her hands and looking down.
Me and Cali looked at each other, but Cali spoke first, "That's okay, Layla. We understand, and we know that you didn't mean what you said."
Layla looked at me, and I nodded, even though I wanted to gut her for what she said about Cali and I. She smiled and sat next to us. We ate our stale bread in silence, and then I felt yet another tap on my shoulder. Holy shit, does anyone understand the importance of a personal space bubble??!
I turned around, and i saw a super tall, buff girl looking at me. She just glared at me. "Um. Can i help you?" I asked.
"Get the fuck out of my room." She answered, rudely.
"Excuse me, but the room I'm in at the moment is called the cafeteria, and last time i checked, it didn't belong to anyone." I answered, standing up.
She groaned, "Bitch, i meant my bedroom. The one you slept in last night. Its mine, and i want it back."
"That's not really my choice, sorry."
She pushed me onto the table, and Layla gasped. Cali got up and grabbed the girl by the shoulders and threw her onto the ground, "BACK OFF BITCH." she yelled.
The nurses grabbed her and pulled her away from the girl, and Cali broke loose from them and ran to me. "You okay?" She asked, helping me up.
"Yeah I'm fine. Just, please don't get into too many fights please." I answered, brushing the bread crumbs off of me.
She smiled, "I can't help it, sorry."
"Aghhhh stop making my life complicated." I groaned.
Cali laughed, "That's my job, shorty." And she walked away.
"YOU'RE ONLY 2 INCHES TALLER THAN ME!!!"
She laughed again, "2 and a half, thank you very much."
