Since Kinoshita was injured, the team had asked {F/N} to take his place for the six on six practice matches her team did against each other. They threw all the regulars on one team and had the leftover players on the other, wanting to shape the non-regulars into players that could possibly become regulars when the third years would have retired.
With that being said, {F/N}'s team consisted out of her, Sugawara, Ennoshita, Narita, and an addition of Yamaguchi and the regular Tsukishima.
{F/N} knew that when they asked her to take Kinoshita's place, things would be hard for her. She was originally a setter, so having to take the place of a wing spiker was not something she was trained on.
It definitely caused some trouble in the match, and in the end was the sole reason her team lost.
To ensure you on how important these matches were, they had even hired an official referee to keep track of everything.
All of them were asked to line up and {F/N} stood next to Ennoshita, clenching her fists at the fact that she seemed to only be a burden to the team. The referee whistled and all eyes turned to him, watching him step off of his ladder to talk to them about improvements.
"You guys are a real eye-opener. I was definitely impressed by number one, two, three..."
He continued to count like that, but when realizing he hadn't named her nor Ennoshita, {F/N}'s eyes widened.
"... Eleven and twelve. Keep it going, and you might just ensure that spot at nationals!"
The team cheered and scattered apart, and soon the girl found herself lost in the midst of the gym's chaos.
"Did you see the look in his eyes when he praised us?!" Hinata exclaimed, hopping onto Tanaka's back in the process.
"Yeah! It's good to hear others say you're good!"
Daichi awkwardly listened to the conversation and wanted to shush them for being so loud, also knowing that {F/N} was listening and realizing that she wasn't mentioned. He gave her an apologetic look but she waved it off, before tapping Noya on his shoulder.
"Hey, Yū? Have you seen Ennoshita?"
The small libero turned around and looked at her, tilting his head slightly. "Chikara said he was going for a walk last time I saw him. Why?"
"Just wondering. Thank you."
She bowed down slightly and jogged outside, covering her eyes with her arm as she let the tears that had threatened to spill finally fall.
Sure, it was a stupid thing to get worked up about, but almost everyone got named. Then why not her? Was she really that bad?
{F/N} noticed Ennoshita sitting by the fountain outside and slowly sauntered over there, trying to hide the fact that she was crying.
"Hey." She whispered when reaching him, sitting down next to him on the rim of the fountain.
"Hey."
{F/N} noticed how tense he was – understandable. What bothered her must've bothered him too.
The two of them sat in silence, but the tears in her eyes wouldn't give up in making their escapes. She tried to be as quiet as possible, but a stray sob left her lips and made the boy next to her worriedly turn his head.
Since he heard her, she might as well just spill the beans.
"We did just as well as them... Why didn't we get a praise?!"
He was surprised that she was the first one to shout.
"We... We deserved to be given a compliment! What did we do wrong?!"
"{F/N}..."
"You've thought about it too, haven't you? Why were we not praised? You know what, to be honest, they shouldn't even be allowed to compare us to them."
The girl grabbed Ennoshita's wrist and dragged him out of his seat, "We're going to walk into the gym with our heads held high and prove that such a silly notion doesn't affect us in the slightest."
The soon-to-be captain was genuinely surprised that she suddenly seemed to take the situation so well.
"You're right..." He muttered, halting in his tracks.
{F/N} wondered why he stopped and turned around, seeing him with a soft smile on his lips.
"Who would've thought I'd see this day," He laughed, "The day I'd confess my feelings for you."
She blushed at his words but smacked the back of his head, making the boys inside of the gym – who had been spying on them this entire time – flinch.
"You're making it sound like a bad thing! If I would've known this sooner, I could've prepared and said 'I like you too' straight of the bat! Gah, I'm such an idiot!"
Ennoshita took her hand in his and pulled her in for a hug, placing a kiss on her forehead. "But you're my idiot."
BONUS:
"Did you really have to be so harsh, Daichi?" Sugawara asked, recalling how sad {F/N} looked after hearing what the referee said.
"If something like that brought her down, she didn't deserve to be here in the first place. Besides," He pointed a finger at the two of them, who came in with fingers intertwined, "My plan worked out well. At last, they're finally dating, right?"
