It always amazed {F/N} how black and white worked with one another.
One dark, one light – yet together a mix of so many different colors. She was able to define objects by their opacity of black, and she hadn't known any better than a world filled with these two colors.
It was kind of fascinating, but at the same time, it scared her. How her entire world consisted out of two colors, it was just... No words could describe it.
That's why, when she heard her brother Yaku going on and on about the fact that colors did actually exist in this world, she was intrigued. There was more than black and white, after all.
"So... How does this... Color thing work, exactly?" She asked, walking next to her sibling who needed to attend his volleyball training.
"They say that everything your soulmate touches goes from black and white into color. It only works if you believe in it, though. Doesn't that sound cool?"
{F/N} tapped her chin and pondered, nodding in reply. "That means my soulmate and I have never even been close to each other... What if they live on the other side of the planet or something?"
Yaku laughed at the way she thought about it and shook his head, "There's only one way to find out!"
"You're too optimistic..."
The two of them continued to walk and eventually reached a crossroad, where {F/N} suddenly stopped in her tracks.
Yaku turned his head to see why she stopped and was surprised to see her pupils so large, a finger raised to point at the building on the other end of the road.
"M-Morisuke... There's a stripe of... O-Of..."
The girl slowly gained a big grin on her face with tears in her eyes as she ran to her brother, grasping his shoulders when reaching him. "There's a long stripe of color here! I-I can see it!"
She was amazed by the complexity of the different hues of the color but had no idea of what to name it, taking it that this was her first time seeing it.
"It... It's actually leading towards Nekoma...!"
"Look at you go, meeting your soulmate at my school."
"Shut it, Morisuke."
She grabbed the boy's wrist and continued to pull him alongside the stripe of color, finding herself in the school's building after a little while. There were lines and blobs of color everywhere, and the girl's eyes couldn't sparkle any brigther than they already were.
"Uh, I get that you wanna venture {F/N}, but I gotta go to practice..."
The girl shook her head to snap herself back into it and followed with an absent mind, "Y-Yeah, no, you're right... I'm with you."
Her eyes tried to take in all of the different colors around her, and she had lost track of how many there were. "T-These... I can't count them! There's so many of them!"
"Yeah, yeah, save it for later."
"You're just jealous that you can't see them."
Her eyes followed the trail on the floor, and when getting closer to the gym, the blob on the floor became bigger.
"A sportsman, huh..." She whispered, grinning from ear to ear as she entered the gym. The floor, the poles of the net, the volleyball cart – even the volleyballs were in color. It was almost getting too much for {F/N}, seeing so much beauty breaking through the surface of black and white.
She bent down to tug her brother's shirt and started whispering, "I think he's on your team!"
The libero smirked and eyed all of them one by one, getting an idea in mind. "Then let's find out who it is."
He jogged towards Kuroo and told him his plan, to which – surprisingly enough – the boy complied.
The captain clapped his hands and made the boys line up, leaving his first question up for grabs. "Is there anyone here that believes in soulmates?"
All of the boys eyed each other, and besides Yaku, Lev and Inuoka, nobody seemed to raise their hands.
"Alright, then. {F/N}, Yaku's younger sister, does in fact believe in soulmates and proclaims to see colors."
A few gasps left the team's mouth as they waited in anticipation, wondering what else their captain had to say.
"She also thinks that her soulmate is one of you guys, so we're all gonna shake her hand until she sees some color."
Kuroo lined up as well as Yaku leaned back, enjoying it from where he stood. "We already know it's not me, so start from left to right."
{F/N} nodded and started with the first member of the team, shaking his hand to no avail.
"So Kuroo's out," Yaku commented, "Thank god."
The captain instantly went over to pick a fight with the shorter libero as {F/N} continued, her mind a little restless. If the person that was supposed to be her soulmate didn't believe in it, how would she convince him otherwise?
She continued to shake hands and when she was on to the last person in line, she was frustrated. None of the boys that believed in it were her soulmate, and if the last person wasn't hers either, she'd look like a complete fool.
Shaking a little, she let out a sheepish grin. "I-I'm actually kind of nervous about shaking your hand..."
The boy, Shibayama, was actually a little surprised by this. Girls usually didn't even talk to him, so why was she nervous to shake his hand?
She took a deep breath and grabbed his hand, her eyes widening when a blob of color appeared on her skin. "Y-You're... It's you..."
She met with his eyes and looked down again, "It's really you!"
Yaku and Kuroo stopped their bicker as they eyed her, surprised that Shibayama – out of all the guys here – was her soulmate.
"But... You don't believe in it, do you..."
She showed a saddened smile as she let go of him, taking a step back to look at all the other guys.
The libero felt so bad – he wanted to believe. If a girl that sought contact with him was saying they were soulmates, then it had to be. He wanted to stop her from leaving, but his feet felt glued to the ground.
"Ah, well... That's fine, I guess. I can't force you to anything."
She tried to smile again, but it kind of stung – she only recently started to see colors, and now that she knew there was someone out there who was meant to be, he didn't see what she saw.
"Well, uh... I'm gonna go home, then. I'll see you later, Morisuke."
Her shoulders slumped a little as she turned around, and the younger libero finally gathered his courage. "W-Wait...!"
{F/N} slowly turned around at the surprising yell and waited for him to speak, which had her as a nervous mess.
"I-I... When you came in, I already thought something was d-different about you...! Your colors seemed to be lighter than anything I had ever seen, and... Now that you said this, I think I know why!"
He closed his eyes for a split second and when he opened them, he looked down at his hand.
Color.
It was all in color.
Slowly but surely, a smile formed on his face as he saw her footsteps on the floor. "I can see it...! Th-There's so many of them!"
As if she had no control of her body anymore, {F/N} launched herself at him to hug him with the biggest smile on her face. She could continue her life in color and with a soulmate – it was all she ever wanted.
