{F/N} loved her dog.
The two of them were practically inseparable – if she went out for a walk, she took him with her; if she went out to the store to get some groceries, she took him with her; and even if she visited a friend, she took him with her. {F/N} really loved her dog. It wasn't hard to tell.
She had gotten him as a gift when she was seven. {F/N} was really sick at the time – she hardly ate, she could hardly move, and her smiles had long gone. It hurt her parents to see her like this, so in attempt to at least return the girl's smile, they had gotten her {Dog}. Ever since, {F/N} refused to leave {Dog}'s side.
Once she was discharged from the hospital, she began teaching him tricks. How to sit, how to speak, how to lay down – she had taught him all the basics, but after all the years they had been training together, he still refused to listen to her as soon as he'd catch sight of a squirrel. Even now, she took him into the forest at least once a week to train it out, but there had been no progress at all.
She tried again. Her parents had gone to a business meeting out of town and requested {F/N} to take good care of the house, leaving behind a list of chores that had to be done. On the list included was of course taking good care of {Dog}, and the specific request not to go into the forest with him when they weren't at home. It occasionally happened that {Dog} would simply disappear, and she had always called her parents to help her find him back. They kindly asked her to wait for their return before taking him to the woods, just in case he would disappear.
"I really appreciate their concern," {F/N} sighed to herself, "but if I let him off the hook for a week he's never going to stop chasing squirrels. That said," The girl grabbed the leash from the kitchen counter and whistled once, then bent over to put it around {Dog's} neck as soon as her faithful four-legged friend had reached her. "There's no way I could not go to the woods with you right now. Who's a good boy?" {Dog} eagerly wagged his tail as he lapped her face with his tongue.
After locking the door behind her, she crossed the street and tucked her hands away in the pockets of her coat. The autumn air felt cold against her skin, as if telling her that she was underdressed, but she paid no mind to it as she looked around and whistled with the birds. The clear sky drew a smile to her lips.
She took her first steps into the forest, then was overwhelmed by the scent of nature. It was a scent she cherished and adored; a scent she had a certain sense of longing for. The fallen leaves crunched underneath her feet, cozying up the ideal environment that she had been sketching in her mind.
"Alright, {Dog}. Sit down for me, buddy."
{Dog} listened to her every command as she undid his leash, wagging his tail and making a run for it as soon as he was set free. He returned to her with a big stick and refused to rest until she'd play fetch with him, earning a chuckle off her lips as she threw it. He continued to bring it back to her for well over fifteen minutes, until the both of them caught a rustling in the trees.
"Stay with me, buddy," she warned him, but she was well-aware that he had stopped paying attention to her. "We're not going to chase the squirrel. {Dog}, sit- no, sit down- {Dog}!" With a sigh, a wave of disappointment washed over her. Her forehead was creased by a deep frown.
{F/N} kept a watchful eye on her companion as he slowly crept up to the squirrel, giving him a final warning. "I can't lose you, boy," she whispered, "if you run off now, I'm not sure if I can find you back." She carefully approached him and patted the top of his head, releasing a relieved breath when he listened to her and turned away. She squatted down and ran her hands through his fur, praising him with unconditional affection. "I'm so proud of you. Who's a good boy?"
