Matheus

His ringing phone woke him abruptly from sleep.

Matheus groaned softly and reached blindly toward the bedside table searching for his phone.

Who on earth would call this early?

The sky outside was still dark.

Even the city itself seemed asleep.

Finally finding the device, he answered without even checking the caller ID.

"Hello," he muttered groggily.

"Good morning, Matheus!" Rafael's annoyingly cheerful voice greeted him immediately.

Matheus frowned deeply.

"Rafael," he complained tiredly while rubbing his forehead, "whatever emergency this is better involve somebody dying."

Rafael laughed loudly from the other line.

"You'll thank me after hearing this."

Matheus sighed heavily.

"Then talk."

And then Rafael dropped the bomb.

"Olga called me."

That instantly woke him slightly.

"She said Briar is flying to Rio de Janeiro today."

Matheus sat upright immediately.

"What?"

Rafael sounded ridiculously pleased with himself now.

"She'll land later around six in the evening."

For several seconds Matheus simply stared blankly ahead.

Briar.

Coming to Rio.

Today.

"What is she doing here?" he asked quickly.

"She's planning her best friend's wedding."

Silence followed briefly.

Then confusion returned.

"And what exactly am I supposed to do with that information?"

Rafael snorted loudly.

"Oh please."

Then his tone shifted teasingly.

"You remember that man you saw hugging her at Josef's wedding? Miguel?"

The sharp ache inside Matheus's chest returned instantly at the memory.

"Yes."

"Well," Rafael continued proudly, "according to Olga, Miguel has been Briar's best friend since they were five years old."

Matheus froze.

Then slowly—

very slowly—

the painful heaviness sitting inside his chest for the past two months finally loosened.

"He's not her boyfriend?" he asked quietly.

"Nope."

Rafael sounded smug now.

"One hundred percent not the boyfriend."

For several seconds Matheus couldn't even speak.

Relief hit him so hard it almost physically hurt.
