Matheus
On the drive back to the estate, Matheus found his thoughts drifting once again toward the mysterious woman from yesterday.
Briar.
Not Aurora.
Definitely not a married pregnant housekeeper.
A small, amused smile appeared on his lips as he replayed the conversation from Shine Bright Housekeeping in his mind.
So the secretary had been right.
No employee there matched the description he gave except Mrs. Ferreira's niece.
Which meant his instincts yesterday had been correct from the beginning.
Briar never looked like a housekeeper.
There had been something refined about her despite the simple clothes and exhausted appearance.
The way she spoke.
The way she carried herself.
Even the way she tried to hide her embarrassment had elegance in it.
Now it finally made sense.
She was related to the owner.
But one question still remained unanswered.
Why would Mrs. Ferreira's niece voluntarily clean an entire two-story estate by herself?
That part still puzzled him.
Matheus drummed his fingers lightly against the steering wheel.
He would get answers soon enough.
Mrs. Ferreira would eventually return from her trip, and when she did, he fully intended to call her personally.
Maybe tonight.
Or tomorrow.
Whichever came first.
Because curiosity about Briar was becoming increasingly difficult to ignore.
The moment he arrived home, he barely had enough time to step inside before the doorbell rang.
Right on time.
He walked toward the entrance and opened the door.
"Hello there, Matheus!"
His two closest friends greeted him in perfect unison.
Matheus laughed immediately.
Standing outside were Flavio Montes and Lucas Alvis, both grinning like troublemakers as usual.
"Bem-vindos à minha humilde morada," Matheus greeted dramatically while hugging them both.
(Welcome to my humble abode.)
Flavio laughed loudly.
"Humilde?" he repeated sarcastically while glancing around the massive estate. "Your 'humble abode' is bigger than most hotels."
Lucas shook his head in amusement.
"Some people truly have no shame."
Matheus smirked.
"Jealousy doesn't suit either of you."
The three laughed comfortably.
Years might have passed, businesses might have grown, and responsibilities might have increased—but whenever they reunited, it still felt like their teenage years all over again.
