Briar
After starting the car, Matheus drove away from the airport parking area smoothly while the city lights of Rio de Janeiro glowed beautifully around them.
Briar remained quietly seated beside him.
Still stunned.
Still overwhelmed.
Still trying to understand how her life had changed completely within a single hour.
One moment she had been a single woman stepping off an exhausting international flight.
And now?
Now she was wearing an heirloom engagement ring while sitting beside the man who had occupied her thoughts for months.
The same man who made her heart flutter without effort.
The same man who had slowly invaded her dreams and fantasies despite barely spending time with her.
And honestly?
She still couldn't fully believe any of it.
Her fingers unconsciously touched the sapphire ring resting on her hand.
Beautiful.
Elegant.
Meaningful.
His grandmother's ring.
The realization alone made her chest tighten emotionally all over again.
Beside her, Matheus remained focused on the road while driving.
And unfortunately for Briar—
the man looked dangerously handsome tonight.
The rolled sleeves exposing his forearms.
The relaxed confidence in the way he handled the steering wheel.
The masculine scent surrounding him inside the car.
Good Lord.
How was she supposed to stay calm around this man?
Without realizing it, she had been staring at him the entire drive.
Then suddenly—
"Is there something wrong?"
Matheus glanced briefly toward her while smiling faintly.
Briar blinked.
"No. Why?"
"You've been staring at me since we left the airport," he replied calmly.
And instead of sounding uncomfortable about it—
he actually looked pleased.
Briar looked away immediately, embarrassed.
"Well..."
She laughed softly under her breath.
"I still can't believe what happened back there."
"You mean my confession?" he asked lightly.
"And the part where you announced we're engaged to my best friend?" she added.
Matheus chuckled quietly.
"Yes. That part too."
Briar shook her head slowly.
"It all happened too fast."
Matheus's expression softened instantly after hearing that.
Then his hand slowly reached for hers resting on her lap.
