VAER
THE STRANGE SHINE IN THE EYES
History class
The students were in class with their heads bowed toward their textbooks. The teacher had ordered lessons to be completed in the classroom and we would have very little time to find exact answers for more than ten issues that should be extracted from a reading on the previous page of the current exercise.
However, the room was completely silent and the teacher took the time to rest on her chair beside her desk. But a noise at the classroom door made her get up from her chair in that instant. She needed to check what noise was it. Opening the classroom door, she saw a young newcomer, who looked a little lost there.
They talked less than three minutes, talking quietly to not disturb the concentration of students in the classroom. After a while, the teacher opened more the wooden passage and the young man entered the room as holding his books under his left arm. He wore black pants, sneakers, white shirt and black vest, in addition to a bowtie. This was the uniform of the boys at school. The boy had long hair to the neck height, in dark brown. His eyes were honey color and his skin was ruddy. He also wore eyeglasses with frames in black.
At that instant, everyone looked in his direction when the teacher stood beside the boy and spoke to us.
"This is Wendel, the newest student in this class."
After that, he sought a vacant place to sit and found an empty chair in the direction of mine, but, on the other side, after two rows of students. His desk was on the side of the wall to my right side. As he sat at his desk, the young man placed his books on the small table. He looked to the side, toward me and removed his glasses from his eyes. At that moment, I was still looking at him, watching his every move. Nevertheless, when his glasses were away from his honey eyes, I saw a different glow in them. They shone intensely in my direction.
Through this, I felt a strange chill and removed my eyes from his direction and after this; he also looked back on his books on the desk and put back his glasses in his eyes.
From that moment, I could not concentrate on something there. Soon I started writing all the answers with a blurred and unrecognizable letter.
"Shit!"
I whispered and everyone heard what had escaped from my lips. Since then, the teacher looked at me seriously and questioned.
"Some problem, Miss Vær?"
"No, Mrs."
I responded, raising my eyes in her direction
Almost ending the classes, the teacher ordered us to make a double work and the names of the doubles were selected by herself. As the double were being announced, the students were picking up their things and leaving the classroom after that.
In the end, there was only me, the teacher and the novice student.
She looked at us and affirmed.
"There is just the two of you now."
I looked towards him and he looked at me at the same time and the teacher went on to say us.
"You two will form double and want the work done on coming next Friday."
Then I picked up my things and left the classroom. Before long, Wendel came after me, running awkwardly as holding the heavy books below his left arm. Soon he began to walk beside me, trying to follow without fail my steps that were softer and slower.
"Hello!"
"Hello!"
"I hope you're not upset by having to form double with me to do the school job."
"I see no reason to be upset with you because of it." I continued walking in front and without looking around. "This is just a work in twosome."
He smiled and stroked one side of his hair with the hand.
"I hope you're smarter than me and can save our note on that work."
I stopped walking and looked up at him, staring him in the glasses, of course.
"Are you serious?"
Wendel realized the seriousness in my voice. I was not in the mood for jokes. In fact, his presence bothered me since he entered the classroom for the first time. The brightness of his eyes when he took off his glasses was still very alive in my mind. In conclusion, I ended up staring at something, to my left and gave up facing him in the face. The new student released a sheepish smile and started walking with me in slow moves.'
"I'm sorry. I realize that you do not like jokes."
"I'm sorry, but I do not know you enough to be so friendly with you. In fact..."
I got confused at my words and I gave up talking to him. Wendel smiled at the side with a provocative smile. He seemed to realize that I was a bit bashful in his presence as I was not acting naturally. I was forcing a little bar to not be myself and feel like a girl with no talent to conquer the boys of my generation.
"So we see later to discuss the school work?"
He asked, stopping at the opening of the school gate. Many students had already gone to their homes. And we both stood there, standing across from each other without saying anything.
Until Wendel perceived that there was nothing else to do besides to say goodbye and go to his house and me to mine. But, before that, he raised his hand and shook mine gently.
"You have not told me your name yet."
"Oh yeah, I call Vær."
He looked into my eyes, feeling my cold hand between his that was warm. After all, he had the hand of human and hot blood ran in his veins.
"So, Vær, see you later."
Just released my hand and walked towards the sidewalk and at that moment he pulled the car keys from his pants' pockets and walked towards it. I looked up to my hand, at the occasion, I still felt the warmth of Wendel over it. It was so strange that feeling again while I felt my body shudder at the touch of his hand over mine.
