Chapter 16
Calum ♥
He was playing so hard to get.
I laughed ridiculously at myself when he left, simultaneously wanting to smash him with a fist and kiss him intensely. Quite frankly, I didn't know he had it in him – this other side. The stubborn one that didn't give in easily.
On Monday he was back at school, and I spotted him in the back of the classroom writing something down. I took a closer look and saw that it was his journal. Before I could go over and tease him about it, Jack came in looking tired and dishevelled.
"Hey... what's wrong?" I asked with a frown. He sighed, running a hand through his hair.
"Luke fucking forgot his lunch again. I keep telling him..." He let out a sigh again and walked over, dropping the plastic Tupperware box on his desk, saying inaudible words to him. Luke seemed indifferent, ignoring him and continuing to write. Jack threw his hands up in desperation and stormed out, brushing past me as if I didn't exist.
I went over. "Oi, Hemmings. What was that all about?"
"None of your business," he replied, not looking up.
"What are you writing?"
"None of your business."
"Want to suck my dick?"
"None of your - what the heck?" His head snapped upwards and we made eye contact at last.
I smirked. "I finally got your attention," I said slyly, picking up his lunchbox. "So why is your brother looking all pissed?"
"You can ask him yourself," he replied, putting his pen down and leaning back in his seat. "You're his boyfriend after all," he added, sounding somewhat sour about it. I picked up his notebook and read what he'd just written, lifting it higher as he tried to snatch it away.
"Are these lyrics?" I asked already knowing the answers. He blushed and looked away with his eyebrows slightly furrowed. He mumbled a 'yeah' in response whilst I read them.
You're telling me the same old story, and that I need to change
If you're not living my life for me, you make it feel that way
You know, you know, we're losing control
I gotta break away or nothing's gonna change.
"You done yet?" he demanded. Instead of doing what I'd usually do, throw the book back to him with a sneer, I smiled brightly.
"These are really good," I complimented. He looked so surprised at what I'd just said – eyes big and round, eyebrows raised, lip ring sitting uncomfortably as his lips parted slightly. "Why do you look so surprised?"
"It's... it's not like you to say something nice to me."
"Hey, you make it sound like I'm some kind of bully."
"You kinda are."
Only then did I truly realise how much of a dick I was. I'd hurt him a lot in the past few years and I desperately wanted to make it up to him... but now, it wasn't a matter of me changing – he wouldn't let me in. I knew he liked me but he had built this massive brick wall around him, and unless I went at it every day with a hammer, I'd never crack it down.
But I could try.
"I'm sorry. I know I said this already numerous times, but I'm genuinely sorry." I actually meant it that time, as well – but he wasn't having it.
"And I told you every time, that simply saying sorry isn't going to do anything."
"Well, what do you want me to do?" I asked in exasperation, clearly mad. He fumbled with his fingers, and bit down on his lower lip. My eyes rested on them, and I had to pinch myself to supress the urge to grab his chin and pull them up so I could kiss him.
"Nothing. You can't do anything to change the past."
"No, but I can change the future. If you let me that is."
He paused momentarily, biting his lip again but this time thrusting it out sexily. "Go on, try."
