"One last notice – it's that time of year when our young talented pupils step up and perform for the school in aid of a chosen charity. The winner will be granted 100 dollars to be donated to their charity and will also receive a trophy. As usual, the sign-up sheet will be on the noticeboard so make sure you sign up before next week," the teacher announced, indicating the sheet that had already been pinned up with a red coloured tack.

I glanced at Luke, who had moved seats earlier that morning. I had the most awful headache from getting so drunk yesterday and I couldn't even remember what I'd done to make him so mad, but I wasn't exactly going to apologise.

I hoped that he'd make eye contact with me to confirm that we were performing together again, but I received none. I brushed it off and picked up my books, heading to chemistry.

At break, I checked the sign-up sheet and saw that Luke had already signed up... with Felicity.

It clearly said, in his scrawl, Luke Hemmings & Felicity Brooke and I couldn't be angrier about it. What about us? What about the agreement we'd made? This was our last talent show before high school ended, possibly our last one ever – and he chose to do it with that lying noob? No – I wasn't having this.

"Michael. Do the talent show with me."

I grabbed his collar and pressed him against the noticeboard, watching his eyes widen. "I... I can't. Sorry."

"But you're all I have left!"

"I said no."

"You're all a bunch of... forget it. I'm going home."

"You can't just leave," Ashton pointed out, coming over with a half-eaten apple in his large hand. "You still have lessons, remember? Besides, you can't graduate if you keep skipping school."

"I feel sick." That wasn't necessarily a lie – the headache from the hangover was preventing me from performing at my best ability and that alone was reason enough to be absent. As soon as I said this, I grabbed my backpack from the back of my chair and headed to the nurse, asking for an absence slip before leaving the building.

Carl stopped me just as I was about to go out the front door. "Calum. My boy. What's with you and Luke?" he asked with a smirk. "Did our little... meeting cause something bad?"

"Leave your fucking nose out of our business, you prick," I grumbled, pushing past him – but he grabbed my arm with force and yanked me back.

"Hey. Not just anyone can call me a prick." I looked everywhere but at him and this annoyed the shit out of him. "Since you guys are no longer an item... how about we get together some time?"

He just didn't know when to back off, did he? All I wanted to do was just go home, fall onto my bed and sleep – he was doing everything to inhibit that. "Look Carl – I hope you're not misunderstanding. What happened the other day was a mistake. I was desperate and you were the only option I had to getting high. I do not like you and I never will, no matter how much weed you offer me-"

My words were cut off when he landed a punch on my nose, making me blink hard as the pain spread further through my head. My nose began to tingle and when I opened my eyes, I was on the floor being straddled by his fucking body.

"You wanna say that again, huh?"

One more punch – this one on my left cheek. I took the pain, knowing I deserved it, and hoping that Luke would see and run over and be my knight in shining armour... but he never did.

Instead, Carl dragged me back to his and made me feel like as high as a fucking hot air balloon.
