Chapter 27

Luke 💕

"Calum, what's wrong?"

He grimaced, not even looking me in the eye.

"Seriously. You haven't said a word to me all morning. Is it cause I couldn't come over last night?"

We found an empty seat in the canteen and got our lunches out, joining Michael and Ashton who were having a quick make out session. "Nothing's wrong," he murmured, but from his tone alone I could tell that something was up.

"You'll have to tell me one day, you know?"

I was taken aback by the look he shot me, as if to say 'shut up or I will slap you'. I backed off, treating it as him just having a bad day, digging into my lunch ravenously.

The end of the day arrived rather too quickly and I was packing up my bag when I saw Calum coming out of the boy's toilets. I headed over, asking, "Do you have football practice today? Because if not, we could-"

"I'm busy, sorry."

Ouch. A sharp pain zoomed through my chest at lightning speed and I raised my eyebrows. "O-oh. Okay. Well... I er... I guess I'll see you on Monday?"

He nodded, biting his lip as he brushed past me.

Whoa now. I had no idea what was going on, but it was obvious he was purposely ignoring me. I'd done something wrong, but I didn't know what. It wasn't like he'd tell me if I asked, so I rolled my eyes and headed home. At least Felicity was happy to see me.

"Luke! Hi," she greeted, opening the door just as I walked up the steps. Someone had been waiting for me to come home, then.

"Hey Felicity."

"How was school?"

"It was fine."

"You mum says we're all going to see a film tonight! Isn't that exciting?"

I groaned internally. "I dunno, I think I'd rather-"

"Oh, Luke, you came home! Put your stuff down, we're going to the cinema."

I couldn't even protest because she'd grabbed the bag off my shoulder and by the time I opened my mouth I was already in the car on the way there.

One sappy love film later, we were sat in a pizza restaurant with a massive plate of Margherita in front of us. Mum cut it up into slices and passed them round with a huge grin. "Enjoy the film?" she asked me.

"It was okay," I murmured, avoiding eye contact with them both. I got my phone out and checked for a text from Calum, but saw none. Mum whispered something like 'he's so shy' to Felicity and I rolled my eyes with a gentle sigh, quiet enough so they couldn't hear.

"I loved the part where the guy pretended to date someone else to make the girl jealous! That kind of thing never happens in real life, but it's so sweet," she mused. Now that I thought about it... the film was rather a lot like what happened between Calum and me. With that memory in my mind, I smiled to myself, reminiscing back to the time when he wasn't ignoring me but was instead desperately trying to get my attention.

Mum went to the toilet halfway through the meal so I was left alone with Felicity, who had hardly touched her share. I was already done, so went back to scrolling through my phone, looking at pictures and texting Michael.

Michael: heyy u free

Luke: soz out for dinner w mum and a friend

Michael: oh, cuz ash cal and i are going for pizza. U up for it?

Luke: cant, pretty much already finished

Michael: well watevz. We're there now, cya

Wait – they were all going for pizza? Surely, they wouldn't come here, right? Of course not, I was worrying for no reason...

I was proven so very wrong when I turned my head to the main door, seeing three tall teenage boys walk in and make eye contact with me.
