I open the door and see Emily coming down the stairs.
"Hey, Riley!"
"Hey, Em. How are you?"
"I'm good, at the moment."
"Do you want to go out? Like to the park or something?"
She stops and thinks for a few moments.
"Yeah, I'd like that. Shall we go now?"
"Okay. I'll get your wheelchair-"
"Riley, I'll be okay. I don't need it."
I raise my eyebrows.
"Emily, I know you and the way you tell everyone that you're fine when you're not. Remember what happened before, Emily..."
Emily looks down and mutters, "Yeah..."
"So, I'm getting the wheelchair out!"
"When did you become the decisive one?" Emily says, laughing.
"Haha, very funny," I say, smiling sarcastically. "Catch you in a minute, so get your shoes on!"
"Alright, alright, bossy!"
I walk to the utility room by the back door and look around for the wheelchair. I spot it behind a cardboard box full of random junk. The Raymonds aren't a tidy family. Well, my mum tries to be, but my dad ensures she fails. There's literally so many boxes of stuff that I don't even know what's in them. It's kind of ridiculous, but that's just how our family works.
I wiggle the folded-up wheelchair out of its position and heave it out onto the wooden floor of the hallway. Folding it out, I look up at Emily waiting by the front door.
"Ready?" I ask.
"Yep!" She says enthusiastically. I think she's pretty excited to get out. As much as at least one of our parents tries to stay at home with Emily, I don't think they realise that a teenager needs to get out sometimes and socialise with someone other than their parents. And a dancer really needs to feel like they are exercising. Since Emily isn't allowed to exercise, hence the reason she has a wheelchair to go out of the house, I figured me pushing her along would be the next best thing.
I lock the door behind us and start walking down the path.
We go along in companionable silence for several minutes. That's what I love about Emily. We don't have to say anything but we still love each other's company. We allow each other to get lost in thought whilst at the same time being together and appreciating that. Yes, sometimes we argue and fall out, but at the end of the day, we love each other. Cheesy as it sounds, that's the bond of sisters.
"Riley, why did you want to bring me out?" Emily asks, bringing me back out of my thoughts.
"I thought we could spend some time together. You've been at home for ages, and I thought you would want a break from boredom to come out and have some fun."
"Aw, that's cute." Emily turns around and grins at me.
"Oh, so I'm bossy and cute now?" I say jokingly.
We arrive at the park and find a bench. Hours pass, as we find so much to talk about, like always. After a while, Emily asks to see my solo and I agree to show her.
"With music, Riley." She says.
"Really?" I answer with mock attitude, with raised eyebrows and a hand on one hip.
"Yes!" Emily replies with mock aggression.
"Fine then!" I reply, rolling my eyes before bursting out laughing.
"What song? I'll play it on my phone."
"Falling Behind." I reply.
"Good choice." Emily smiles.
"I know." I say with a grin.
