"You promised you would clear your schedule for those days. We have family coming for this and you're saying you have a trip to go to!" My mom yelled furiously.
Xavier closed the door and dropped his bag on the floor. We were used to coming home and finding them arguing. They bicker over the smallest things but this sounded way more serious. I followed Xavier to where the screaming was coming from and they were in my dads office.
"Honey, I will be back on that day. I promise!"
"You promised Juliana, that was the only reason why she even agreed to the party!" She snapped.
They were talking about my sweet seventeen. When I turned sixteen dad had to go to China for a job trip and we had to move my sweet sixteen to this year. I kept insisting for them to forget about it. The owners of the venue agreed to give my parents a full refund and I hadn't even ordered my dress yet. Mom was persistent, she wanted to do the party for me and dad promised he would leave that week cleared for my party. I guess he lied once again.
"Honey, I promise I will be here Saturday morning." He tried reasoning with her but once she gets mad there's no way for your words to be processed.
Xavier turned to look at me as if he expected for me to say something. I don't have any thing to say about this. I can't be mad like my mom is, I understand. I get his job description ask for him to be going out of town most of the time and I understand he can't cancel meetings for a party. Even if his own family can make time from their busy schedule to come to my party, it's impossible for my dad to do the same.
A small knot formed in the middle of my throat the moment mom voice cracked. "I-I'm going up to my room." I told him and quickly went down the hall and up the stairs.
Hearing her voice crack made me remember of all the times when I was younger dad would do the same thing. He missed their anniversary, the opening of the cafe, and many memories mom wishes he didn't. It hurts me seeing her like that, I agreed to the party because she seemed satisfied with his answer. If I knew he was going to pull another stunt like last year I would've told them to cancel everything.
The sudden knock on my door snapped me out of my thoughts. Opening the door, my dad was standing on there with a small frown on his face. Whenever they fight he's the one who comes and checks on us. He knows we don't take their fighting so lightly. Xavier zones himself out of their screaming and I do my best to convince myself their love is still as strong as the first time they met.
"How much did you hear?" He asked, stepping inside my room. I walked over to my bed and sat on the edge, looking down at my hands I shrugged.
"Enough."
"I promise you-" I raised my hand up cutting him off.
"You really shouldn't promise, when the last three times you broke those promises."
I want to believe his promises-I really do. After multiple broken promises anything he says doesn't matter to me anymore. I have enough hope for him to last a lifetime but if he promises me he is going to be here on time for my party and doesn't show up I'lll have lost all hope for him.
He walked over to me and forced me to look at him. "No, I promise you sweetheart, I'll be here on time."
"Okay." He pressed his lips on my forehead and left my room. I threw myself back on the bed sighing loudly.
Arriving this morning to school, people were murmuring more than usual. Something had happened causing stir throughout the school. As I approached my locker, Demi and Maria were waiting for me, they had the same look expression as everyone in the halls.
"What's going on?" I asked them.
"Have you not heard the news?" Maria said surprised.
I shook my head. She grabbed my arm and pulled me closer to her. "Apparently Alejandro auditioned for the Phantom of the Opera and he got the part as the phantom. Everyone's freaking out." She said quietly.
The news brought joy within me, but I acted surprised by the news. I promised Alejandro I wouldn't tell anyone about it. I get why everyone was making a big deal about the legend being part of the play. Alejandro doesn't give off the artistic vibe-people surprise you.
"Are you sure?" I played along, reacting as shocked as they were. "A legend made the schools play, are you sure this isn't a prank the guys are doing?"
Demi shook her head. "Hell no, this is real. I heard someone say they saw him audition for the part, they said he sings good."
"I guess we are going to have to wait and see if it's true." I turned to my locker and opened the lock.
"Can you imagine Alejandro performing as the phantom?" I dropped my bag inside my locker grabbing my text book for my first class.
"I don't know why everyone is making a huge fuss about him being the phantom." I ignored her continuing to get my things together before the bell rings. "So?"
Demi shrugged. "It's a shocker."
I slammed my locker and turned to look at them. "Well I think it's great he auditioned and made it. I'm sure he's auditioned because he wanted too and not a prank him and my brother are doing."
"Definitely not a prank." Alejandro said behind me.
"See." I smiled.
"It's been a goal of mine to perform in a high school play. I don't get why everyone is so shocked." He chuckled. "Not the first time I shock everyone with my hidden talents." He was referring to when he won the state science competition. The gossip going around was nothing compared to when he brought back the trophy for best scientific experiment Everyone wondered if the principal had gotten the names confused when he made the announcement Monday morning about Ale winning first place.
He likes to play stupid yet stupid is the last thing he is. Believe or not, I think Alejandro has a very bright future ahead of him. He's placed the effort and he's been seeing results I don't understand why everyone is being stereotypical. He's one of the bad boys of the school and he' smart, athletic, and has a clean record. There's nothing wrong with that.
"You have a good point there." Maria smiled. "You never fail to impress us."
"Amen to that." Demi chuckled.
"Are you going to class already?"
"Yeah, I can't be late to Furgenson class again." I muttered. I said goodbye to the girls and started making my way to the class. Ale had decided to walk with me since we were both taking AP European History together.
As soon as we made into the history department, he dragged me down the opposite hallway of where our class was located. Pulling me into the teacher's office wing, he looked at me excitedly.
"So?" He stared at me, waiting for me to do something.
"Oh right." I chuckled. I wrapped my arms around his neck pulling him in for a hug. "Congratulations on the part. I told you-you'd get the part."
"Thanks! I'm super stoked about it, but I don't want everyone to see me like this. So I've been playing it all cool."
"Right, right. You have an image to keep intact." I chuckled.
He straighten himself out, fixing his shirt. "Of course, bad boy status needs to be on point." He said sarcastically.
Little did he know, this was only building up to his status.
