I wasn't sure if I was angry at Rodney or was impressed his plan to raise money had worked.
All together we raised three hundred dollars from the kids in the cafeteria and because of that the cheerleaders had enough money for their bus while we got to spend the next week in detention, weekend included.
Rodney, Andrew, Leopold and I all got detention since we were the main culprits. They probably would have given Lucy and Gene detention to, but Gene was in good with the principal and Oscar insisted that Lucy hadn't had anything to do with it so she got off.
So from one Thursday to the next I spent two hours every day in after school detention with my boys as our shenanigans spread through the school like wildfire. I was beginning to get a bad boy reputation as was the others.
They all reacted differently to the attention; Rodney loved it, it made Andrew uncomfortable and Leopold was indifferent. I was used to it, so it was nothing new.
In detention we weren't allowed to talk, weren't allowed to do our homework, weren't allowed to listen to music, the only thing we were permitted to do was sit there in the worst boredom a kid can deal with.
The only good thing that came out of getting detention for this music thing was that somehow it made Lucy and I closer.
Every day after school we met up and I helped her with her homework, each morning she let me pick her up early as long as I got her coffee and she came with me to the radio show. I was never really one for female friends, they were to dramatic and hard to understand but I loved being around Lucy. She was hilarious, smart and had the same taste in every as me. The more I tempted her out of her shell the more her personality began to show.
She also hung out a lot with Gene when us boys were in detention, in the short amount of time they knew each other they had become close and their favorite topic to talk about was art. Lucy was really really into it and knew a lot of really cool facts about it that made the subject seem interesting.
Also in no time at all they put a plastic covering over the light switch I had stolen so the only way you could get into it was with a key.
Probably a smart thing to do because there were a lot of idiots like me.
Finally the torturous week of detention came to an end and I felt freedom as I walked into school that Friday morning. I was nice to know I didn't have to hear my dad rambling about me becoming a gangster this morning. He usually dropped that accusation when my punishments came to an end.
It was also nice to know I had the superhero run to look forward to after school. It had been the talk the entire week, especially after I encouraged everyone in my school to sign up on my Monday radio show. My friends and I were all fully intent on winning and looking glamorous. Yesterday after school we all crashed at Gene's house so we could finish them.
"Hey Ben! My man!" Jake called out and I rolled my eyes before putting on my fakest smile and looking back at him.
"Jake! I always seem to run into you here," I said and he laughed as we high fived.
"Its the only time of day I feel like I can catch up to you. Your always scurrying off somewhere." He informed. I can promise you Jake that wasn't an accident.
Since the last time I saw him and he blew me off for a girl even though I was upset, I had been avoiding him and our entire friend group like the plague. I'm pretty sure the only reason they notice was because my other popular friends have been whispering about it and coming up with reasons.
Fortunately no one was pointing fingers at Lucy, and that was probably because I tried to make sure someone else was around when we hung out. If people thought we were dating, which I think they already did, then all hell would break loose. Popular kids were all up in each others business here and if you got involved with someone they thought it was their right to know every little detail and judge the relationship.
I refused to put her in that kind of crossfire.
"I've been busy. Got a lot going on lately as you know." I shrugged and Jake nodded as he then patted my back.
"I can totally relate dude."
Yeah, sure you could Jake.
"Thats why we both deserve to let go of our problems for a night and enjoy ourselves. I talked to your fat friend Ronald-"
"Rodney." I corrected, a little bit irritated he had to call Rodney fat. Rodney wasn't fat, he was just a little chubby.
"Yeah whatever, anyways, I talked to him and he said he'd be more then happy to have Radio Boy and the Fusions perform at my party tomorrow night if your cool with it?" He informed and I sighed heavily.
Rodney needed to stop committing us to things without our permission but I wasn't going to get mad at him because I've done the same to our friend group.
"Yeah sure. I have nothing going on that night," I said reluctantly and Jake grinned.
"Awesome man! I'll text you the details later and see you then." and with that he was gone. Why did it feel like he was only approaching me lately if he needed something? Shaking my head at him I decided not to let him drag me down as I headed down the hall to Lucy's locker.
Lately she had been waiting there for me instead of trying to run away which was a nice change.
"Hey Ben! What took you so long?" She asked as she pushed herself off her locker and I smiled.
"Sorry, I got held up by one of my friends," I said, suddenly compelled to hug her so without giving it a second thought I wrapped my arms around her and pulled her into my chest. Fortunately she didn't protest, instead she hugged me back with a soft giggle.
"What's this for?" She asked and I shrugged as I hugged her for a moment more then pulled back.
"Just because I felt like giving you a hug I guess," I said and she gave me one of her famous eye rolls before reaching in her pocket and pulling out a folded piece of paper.
"I drew this for you." She informed, making me break out into a painfully wide grin as I unfolded it. It was really well drawn picture of King Kong and Godzilla playing video games in a Chinese house with toy army tanks surrounding them. It had to be the coolest thing anyone ever gave me.
"Lucy! This is awesome! You drew this?" I asked in shock as I looked up at her and she nodded.
"The King Kong vs. Godzilla movie you made watch last night inspired it." She shrugged and I folded up the paper neatly before clapping. "Why are you clapping?" Lucy asked, looking at me like I was having a seizure.
"Because this drawing deserves a round of applause, its wonderful!" I gushed, making her blush.
"Its okay." She mumbled and I narrowed my eyes at her before flicking her.
"Quiet you, its fantastic," I said as I then slipped off my backpack so I could put the drawing into my binder. When I finished I then gestured to the hall.
"To homeroom?" I asked and she nodded with a smile.
"To homeroom."
Before I could began to escort her though a throat was cleared. "Actually Ben I need you in my office we have to talk," Oscar said and I turned around slowly to see him standing there.
"Right now?" I asked softly and he nodded firmly.
"Now."
