"Wait, so you almost kissed her?" Andrew asked carefully, wanting to make sure he heard me right as we both walked to lunch at a slow pace so I'd have the opportunity to talk to him alone.
"Yeah. If those stupid birds didn't interrupt I think I would've." I admitted, feeling my stomach go topsy turvy at the thought. At that Andrew stopped walking and grabbed my arm to stop me from walking as well.
"Ben...I know you hate it when I compare girls to fire but I think this is a prime example," He said and I nodded slowly.
"I know. I don't know whats wrong with me. I wasn't interested in her when we first met and now she's all I ever think about. I don't know if its because of this whole mess I'm trying to sort out for her or if its because I'm developing feelings for her, I just know its there and its driving me crazy."
I ran a hand through my hair as a grim look crossed Andrew's face.
"Ben...have you ever thought about what happens after the thirty-three day mark...if your plan works? I'm worried your getting to deeply invested in the cause and that if it succeeds your going to withdraw. Ben, when this is all over you can't just go back to ignoring her, that's going to kill her for sure. She trusts you more then I think you realize and the responsibility of looking out for someone emotionally unstable is massive."
The only thing I could focus on in that concern though was that he call Lucy 'emotionally unstable'.
"She's not unstable Andrew, shes hurt and just so you know I'm not going to ditch her when this is all over. Yeah, its stressful but I'm willing to take on the responsibility of her well-being because no one else in this school or in her home it seems will. Its not that hard really, you just need to treat her like a human being and be a shoulder for her to lean on!" I snapped.
I didn't like it that he called her that, I knew Andrew meant well and had a really good point but I couldn't bear the thought of someone, him included, thinking of Lucy as a mental case.
"Okay, okay. I'm sorry." Andrew sighed and I sighed as well.
"I'm sorry to, I know this whole situation has been hard on you to." I mumbled. Andrew then gave my shoulder a firm squeeze of affection.
"I'm your friend Ben and even before I was I was supportive of whatever you did because I admire you. I think what your doing is amazing and I wish I knew more people like you," He said and I offered a small smile.
"I do genuinely like her Andrew, I just don't know where the feelings came from." I reassured and Andrew nudged me.
"I think they appeared when you realized how similar Lucy is to you. I think she likes you to Ben." And with that we both silently agreed to end the conversation there as we made our way to lunch room.
It felt good to get some things off my chest but I still had a lot to think about and reflect on. Unfortunately I didn't even have a spare second to consider what I wanted for lunch when Victoria approached us the instant we walked into the cafeteria. She had her psycho girlfriend face on.
"Hey Ben, I heard the radio show this morning," She said and I suddenly felt like I'd been punched in the gut. I didn't consider even once that having Lucy on the radio show could expose her to some people I didn't want to know about her.
"Yeah, so?" I asked, trying to keep my composure calm as Andrew tensed next to me and let his hand hover near my fist just in case he needed to stop me from doing something stupid.
"I just wanted to let you know that I don't care, I have a new boyfriend and I'm in love with him so your attempt to make me jealous didn't work," She said, smiling with her crazy eyes and I shared a look with Andrew.
