It's really weird how one moment everything can seem incredible and wonderful then all in an instant it falls terribly apart. The sound of Luke's car connecting with the pole was pounding in my head as I sat in the hospital waiting room and it was making me fist and tug at my hair while I tried to get control of my breathing.
"Luke! Luke! Can you hear me!" I called out to the wreckage as I ran towards it once the smoke cleared. Behind me the kids all stayed back, a silence taking over the crowd. Only one boy ran up to the destroyed car with me. It looked really bad. The entire back and front doors on Luke's side was crushed in, the front was smashed and smoke was choking the air.
My breathing starting picking up as I sat back in the chair, gripping the armrests.
"Luke! Luke say something! Please!" I practically screamed, feeling an icy terror grip me. My adrenaline was stronger than my fear though and that was what made run up to the car. I could see him inside, just barely and he didn't look like he was moving. I could hear him moaning though, moaning in pain. It was a horrible sound.
"Luke! Luke, I need you to say something, I need you to tell me if you're okay." I begged as the boy who ran up to the car with me walked around to examine the wreck. He then turned to the crowd of kids.
"Help us push the car away from the pole! He's pinned down by the door! And someone call an ambulance!" He yelled. For a moment the kids hesitated because we all knew we'd get in trouble for this but then some boys came forward as I ran around to the end of the car. We all then grouped together and pushed the car hard. It wasn't budging.
"This isn't going to work! We should wait for the cops!" One of the guys called out but I wasn't going to sit back and wait half an hour for the cops to rescue Luke.
"No! We get him out now! He's going to die! Stop standing there and complaining and help or so help me I'll kill you!" I yelled at the guy and he stiffened a bit before leaning back down to the car. I never ever wanted to yell like that again, I scared myself but I couldn't worry about that right now.
"Go! Push! Push!" I shouted at the boys and all of us threw all our weight against the car. With a groan it shifted slightly.
"Again! Don't' stop pushing!" I screamed at them, my adrenaline surging through me so strong I probably could've pushed the car by myself. I wasn't letting him die, not today.
I badly wish I still had that adrenaline from earlier right now but it had faded and that terror was beginning to win. It was consuming me, swallowing me whole.
"Keep pushing! We've almost got it!" I yelled, feeling my throat going raw from how loud I was shouting while everyone around us either fled the scene or lingered looking petrified. We almost had the car away from the pole. We were too close to getting him out. Far off I could hear police sirens and an ambulance wailing in the background. They were close.
"C'mon!" I urged and with one last giant push from all seven guys, we pushed the broken down car away from the pole. Once we did, I ran bravely over to the driver's side. Luke must've passed out, or been knocked out because he was leaning back against the seat as blood trickling down his face.
"Luke! Luke I don't if you can hear me, but it's Ben! I'm getting you out; it's going to be okay." I swore, my adrenaline still pounding through me as the boys who had helped me ran off before the cops got here. The only who stayed was the first boy that didn't need to be asked to help.
