"Oh my gosh, Allie. I can't believe this happened. I'm so sorry I couldn't help you. I saw the car coming but it all just happened so fast. I'm...I'm... Sorry, I'm wasting time right now. Your mom snuck me in for a minute, and I'm sitting here crying like a baby. I can't live without you. You need to wake up, do you hear me? Please wake up, Allie."
The door to the hospital room opens with a squeak. I look up, wiping my face with one hand, not wanting to let go of Allie's hand with my other one. Allie's mom Julia gives me a sad look, and I know it's time for me to go. I face my best friend again and give her cheek a soft kiss, wiping off fresh tears before they can fall on her face.
"I'll be back tomorrow. Be strong, Alliebear. I love you." The mention of the silly pet name I gave her years and years ago brings on a new round of tears as I walk out of the hospital room.
