You woke up, sunlight nearly blinding you. As you sat up, cold water from the ocean in front of you buried your legs. Startled, you jumped up.
"W-where am I?!"
You said, panicking. Frantically, you tried to remember how you got here, but you couldn't remember anything from last night. You spun around, looking at all of your surroundings.
"W-what?"
You muttered to yourself. You were on an island. There was nothing around you except a vast ocean one way, a jungle the other way, no other land in sight. Scared, you slowly walked around the wet sand closest to the ocean, looking for any clues to how you got here. As you walked, you saw something in the distance. It looked like the outline of a person from far away. Suddenly, you remembered. You and your friend Nate had been on a cruise when a large storm hit, knocking you overboard. The last thing that you saw was Nate leaning over the railing yelling your name before you passed out into pitch black darkness.
"Nate?!"
You yelled, running towards the body. The closer you got to it, the more sure you were that it was him. Finally, you reached him. He was laying on his stomach. Carefully, you rolled him over. Sure enough, It was Nate. His clothes were soaked and he was missing one of his ear gages. However, his glasses were still in tact to his shirt collar, except for the shattered lens on the right side. He lay there motionless, tears formed in your eyes.
"Nate?"
You said, frantically checking him for any sign of life. Your mood lightened slightly when you saw his stomach move up and back down again.
"Thank goodness, you're breathing."
You lifted up his head and rested it on your lap. Nate began to cough, and his eyes slowly opened.
"Y/n?"
He said between coughs in a scratchy voice.
"Nate, are you okay?"
You said. He sat up and rubbed his head.
"I-I think so. I'm just glad that you're alive."
He gave you a weak smile to make you feel better, but you couldn't smile back, no matter how hard you tried.
"I can't believe you fell off of the boat too."
Nate awkwardly looked around for a moment.
"Umm, I didn't fall off.... when you fell, I.... jumped in after you."
Your eyes widened.
"Y-you risked your life... for me?"
You said, shocked. He walked closer and rested a hand on your shoulder.
"I wouldn't have been able to live without you Y/n. The only choices that I had were to live with guilt for the rest of my life because I couldn't save you, or drown with you."
A tear formed in his eye, he let out another weak smile to hide it. You looked over Nate's shoulder and realized how much the sun had set. There was probably only a few more hours of daylight left.
"Come on, we have to make some sort of shelter for the night."
You said, walking into the large jungle on the island.
"Okay, but let's make it near this beach, just so we have some clear space."
Nate said, following after you. You both searched through the woods and gathered some large leaves and sticks. After about an hour of hard work, you had made a small tent. Nighttime had already come by the time the tent was finished, the only light was the stars in the sky, otherwise it was pitch black. You and Nate crawled into the hut. The roof was low and there was little room for you to move, but you finally found enough space to lay down. You could feel Nate's back against yours, which was the only warmth that you had at the moment. For what seemed like forever, you struggled to fall asleep, shivering like crazy, listening to the faint sounds of nature all around. You felt Nate roll over and wrap one arm around you, pulling you closer. It helped a lot, but you were still cold. You turned around to face him and hugged him tightly, tears rolling down your face. The shivering turned into trembling, you had never been so scared in your life.
"Shh it's okay,"
Nate began to whisper to you.
"we're going to get home, I promise."
