I closed my eyes and clung to Daniel's hand tightly as we jumped off the building. I felt a sickening jolt as we fell a short distance and landed on another building.
"Quickly." Daniel told me as he ran and pulled me after him.
We ran and ran for what felt like miles until eventually we boarded a train. Daniel remained by my side as though he was afraid that something might happen to me. As I glanced at him, he smiled at me and handed me a hoodie.
"You need to put this on." he told me.
I nodded and quickly put the hoodie on. He gently pulled the hood up and tucked my hair into it. I smiled my thanks at him. I gazed down at the ring on my finger and gently twirled it around. Doubts kept swirling around my head...I hadn't wanted to humiliate Daniel in front of a crowd of people, but I wasn't sure that marrying Daniel was the right thing to do. We hadn't been together for years and even though we still loved each other, I didn't trust him. I couldn't help but wonder if love alone would be enough.
"What's wrong?" Daniel asked quietly, clearly picking up on something.
"It's nothing." I said quickly. I slowly removed the ring from my finger and gazed at it. This should be a happy moment, yet it was clouded by my doubts.
"Why are you taking your ring off?" he asked, sounding worried.
I took a deep breath and gazed into his deep blue eyes. I needed to tell him the truth, I owed him that much.
"I'm not sure that I can marry you." I admitted.
"What?" he whispered, sounding slightly devastated.
"Why did you say yes then?" he quickly added.
"I didn't want to humiliate you." I told him.
I could feel Merritt and Henley watching me intently but I didn't care.
"Why don't you want to marry me?" he asked sadly.
"We are not even together anymore." I pointed out.
"I know we haven't been together for a while but we were good together, we know that it will work." he argued.
"Plus I love you, you love me right?" he added.
"Yes, but I don't trust you." I sighed.
"I know and that's my own fault...but I promise that I will never let you down again. I'd do anything for you." he reassured me.
"Just give me a chance." he whispered.
I continued staring at the ring. Maybe he was right, it was obvious that he loved and respected me and I felt the same about him. He would clearly do anything to protect me...I just had to learn to get over the fear that he might leave me again. I couldn't deny that I did want to spend the rest of my life with Daniel. I needed to take this chance and hopefully in time I would learn to trust him again. I heard him sigh in relief as I slowly placed the ring back on my finger.
"It's a beautiful ring." I said, trying to lighten the mood.
"I thought you might like it." he smiled.
"I gave Mum the picture of the one I wanted and she gave it to me before the show." he told me.
"Clever." I giggled.
"Our twitter has been going mad after you guys got engaged on the show." Henley piped up as she gazed at her phone.
"Oh that reminds me." Daniel said quickly rummaging in his pocket and handing each of us a cell phone.
"What are these for?" I asked as I took one of them.
"We need to dump the old ones, we're going off the grid." he stated, holding out his hand for our old phones.
I sighed and reluctantly handed him my phone, feeling slightly emotional when he threw the phones into the train bin. Caitlin had brought me that phone.
"This is our stop." Merritt stated as the train slowed down.
Daniel took my hand as we followed Henley and Merritt to god knows where. No matter how much time I spent with them, they never seemed to include me in their plans. But I decided not to dwell on it. I smiled to myself as we continued walking, Daniel and I were officially engaged. I would soon be his wife, it almost seemed to good to be true.
Before I knew what was happening, we'd arrived at Central Park.
"It's locked." Henley sighed.
"Weren't you listening, nothing is ever locked." Jack beamed as he appeared on the other side of the gate.
"Good work, Mr Wilder!" Henley congratulated him.
He smiled at her and quickly unlocked the gate. As we walked into the park I quickly placed my hands in my pockets. I had no idea how Jack would react if he noticed my engagement ring. I needed to talk to him about it before he found out from someone else.
