Daniel's POV
The last few days had seemed like a lifetime to be away from the love of my life and our son. Throughout the time that Jack and I were away, they were constantly in my thoughts. I counted the minutes until I could return to my beautiful Mia. I missed her so much that it almost hurt to think about her.
Thankfully the journey back to the safehouse passed quickly and I smiled to myself as the taxi finally came to a stop.
"I can't believe we actually pulled it off." Jack chuckled as we climbed out of the taxi.
"Me neither, we were lucky." I agreed, following him into the house.
"Either that or we're just good." he grinned.
"Maybe a bit of that too." I smiled.
"Another couple of weeks and we'll be done." he said thoughtfully.
As I walked into the house, I sighed in relief. Mia and I would soon be reunited and I would never have to leave her side again. I couldn't wait to tell her what I'd been doing all this time, to finally be open and honest with her. To no longer keep any secrets from her seemed too good to be true. As I climbed the stairs I smiled to myself, Mia would be thrilled when I told her the good news. I frowned to myself as I walked into our bedroom and saw that it was empty. My heart plummeted as I peered into Cameron's cot and saw that it too was empty. I turned and gazed around the room, frowning as I saw that the wardrobe door was open and it had been emptied of it's contents. It felt like someone had stabbed me in the heart, the tight feeling that I felt in my chest making it difficult to breathe.
My head snapped towards the doorway but I sighed in disappointment as I saw that it was just Henley.
"What is going on?" I whispered, desperately hoping that she wouldn't confirm my biggest fear.
She sighed and slowly handed me a letter.
"What's this?" I frowned.
"Just read it." she said quietly.
I nodded and turned my attention back to the letter, my hands shaking as I slowly removed it from the envelope. Even though I desperately wanted to know what was going on, I found myself afraid to read the note. All evidence pointed towards the fact that she'd left me, but that didn't make any sense. I hadn't done anything wrong and we were engaged to be married, so why would she suddenly pack up and leave? Unless she didn't go of her own free will...
Danny,
Firstly I want you to know how terribly sorry I am that it has come to this, my heart aches at the thought of leaving your side, but there is no other way. I realised a while ago that it isn't fair on Cameron to be raised in the environment we live in. He needs security and stability and we can't give him that when we are constantly running from the FBI. Despite what we feel for each other, I have to put Cameron first.
It breaks my heart that you will miss out on seeing Cameron grow up, but this is the only way. You need to stay away from us, so that I can keep him safe and maybe one day when all of this stuff with the FBI is over, you will be reunited with him once again.
Take care of yourself Danny, I love you more than I could ever say.
Now and always,
Your Mia.
As soon as I finished reading the letter, my eyes flickered to Henley. Even though I tried to focus on her face, the mist of tears forming in my eyes were blurring my vision. On impulse I held the letter against my face and sighed in contentment as I inhaled the familiar scent. In his moment as I closed my eyes and inhaled Mia's perfume, I could almost believe that she was still with me.
"What...is all this about?" I whispered, my voice breaking slightly.
"She's gone Daniel." Henley said gently.
"But...I don't understand!" I exclaimed.
Even though she had given me her reasons in the note, it didn't make any sense. She'd been willing to give up her life for me before, so why had everything suddenly changed? My thoughts wandered to Cameron as I thought about her letter. She had a point, it wasn't fair on Cameron to live this life. He'd never asked for this, which is why Jack and I had been trying to fix things. If only she'd given me more time. As I turned the envelope around and peered inside, I sighed and tipped it upside down, my heart breaking a little as her engagement ring landed on my hand.
"When did she leave?" I asked quietly, unable to tear my eyes away from Mia's ring.
"Yesterday, she could be miles away by now." she replied sadly.
"There's only one place she'll go." I replied.
"Caitlin's." I added, as I quickly picked up my keys.
"Where are you going?!" Henley cried.
"To get my family back." I said shortly."Shouldn't you finish your mission first, otherwise if you turn up there now, you'll both be arrested." she pointed out.
I froze and turned to face her.
"How do you know about that?" I frowned.
"Jack told me." she sighed.
"Just wait a while until you can make her safe again." she quickly added.
I considered her words for a few moments. As much as I hated the thought of being parted from Mia, I knew that Henley was right, I had to do right by her and my son.
"We can't be apart." I whispered dispondently, knowing in my heart that Henley was right.
"Just for now." Henley whispered back.
