"I mean surgery is kind of a big thing you know. I'm not comfortable going through it."

"Not even to help your son?" My mother is absolutely shocked. I honestly can't say I'm surprised. I don't like the idea of surgery either. But if Dirk needed one of my organs I'd probably give it to him. I probably would if anyone I knew needed it. Even this asshole.

"I'm sorry. I would, but-" Dirk's chair squeals as he stands up so fast pushing in back a foot or two. He grabs a fistful of my dad's shirt and yanks him up.

"I've defended you. I've helped you. You can't offer the same to Dave?" I've never heard Dirk's voice like this. It's like a snarl.

"What's he ever done for me? If it was you maybe I'd think more about it. But-" Dirk drops him so suddenly he plops into the chair and almost falls out of it.

"You know what? Dave was right about you. You're a worthless piece of shit. Pay your own damn bills. Come on Dave."

"Ok." I don't hesitate to follow him out. I'm happy he stood up to him for once. "So now what?"

"Blackmail."

"What?"

"I have so much dirt on him. Shit I know he won't want coming out. I'm going to blackmail him until he gives you that damn kidney." I'm taken a back by Dirk's plans. That doesn't seem like something he would do. I look at him closer and see that he's grinding his teeth and his fist are clenched so tight they're shaking.

"That... doesn't sound like something you would normally say." We're in the parking lot now and I don't remember walking this fast to get here. I was keeping all my attention on Dirk. He looks... dangerous.

"So? Shouldn't you be happy? He's an asshole. I want to help you, and I'm going to make sure you get help even if I can't be the one to help you." Dirk opens the car door for me and I hesitate. I trust him, but he's being weird right now. I'm worried about him. Dirk quirks an eyebrow at me and I slowly manage to get into the car. He goes around to the other side and starts up the engine. "That was slower than usual, even accounting for you're casted leg. You're not usually that slow." Dirk starts speeding through the traffic in a race to get home. I brace myself the best I can against the door and the dashboard.

"Dirk slow down."

"I just have to get home and then I can set everything up and we can get you back to normal." Dirk isn't even talking to me as he weaves throughout traffic. The car in front of us stops suddenly and I throw my hands up in the air squeezing my eyes tightly.

"Dirk!" Something slams across my body pushing me back into the seat as the car lurches forward and then back. The stop was way too abrupt, but I didn't hear any crashing. I put my hands down and open my eyes slowly. There's barely an inch between us and the car in front of us. I unbuckle my seatbelt and hurry to get out of the car, but it was Dirk's arm that slammed me back into the seat and he grabs the front of my shirt.

"What the hell are you doing?"

"I just got out of the hospital for fucks sake Dirk! I don't want to go back!" He rolls his eyes and starts driving again. He somehow manages to grab my seatbelt and buckle me back in.

"I'm not going to put you back in the hospital. You have nothing to fear from me."

"Yeah I'm not so sure about that." I cross my arms and stare straight ahead. I can see the way Dirk tenses out of the corner of my eye.

"What is that suppose to mean?" I can hear the hurt in his voice.

"You're scarring me."

"I'm scarring you? How?" He seems so lost. Like he can't understand how I could be afraid of him right now.
