My breath catches in my throat when I see an officer is at the door. Everything Dirk had said makes sense now, and so does him only wearing boxers. It really looks like he just rolled out of bed, that's his alibi, and I'm part of it. Oh god I wonder what happened. I hope he didn't do anything wrong. "I'm sorry to bother you at this time of night sir, but I have a few questions for you."
"Can it wait till mornin?" Dirk rubs a hand over his face and yawns. I take a few steps away from my door and the officer glances at me.
"I'm afraid it can't. May I come in?" Dirk opens the door more and the officer comes in. He looks around the apartment before his eyes rest on me.
"What's this about?"
"There was a shooting not to far from here. A mass shooting actually."
"What's that got to do with us?"
"It was at a warehouse, and apparently you play music there sometimes."
"Well I didn't tonight. I was at a private party gig. It was over at nine and I was home by nine fifteen." Dirk nods to me. "I was home since then, Dave would know."
"Is there anyone else to confirm this?"
"I talked to my dad on the phone before nine."
"Is this true Dave?" I nod my head and the officer raises an eyebrow.
"Yeah. He was home sometime after nine. We went to bed after ten. He actually went first too." The way the officer is looking at me makes me nervous.
"Here you can back it up from my gig too." Dirk goes over to the door and digs through the pocket of his jacket. I know he didn't wear it, he really set this all up. Dirk pulls out a card and hands it to the officer. The officer skims over it and tucks it away in one of his many pockets.
"Your hands looked scrubbed raw, any reason for that?" Just now I take notice of Dirk's hands. It does look like he washed them really hard. Dirk swallows hard and his fist clench. He didn't think of this, he doesn't have anything to say.
"Not that it's really any of your business, but he was allergic to something we ate. He puffed up and then tried to wash what ever it was off." Dirk lets out a little puff of air and relaxes.
"You should get that allergy test then, wouldn't want it to happen again."
"Yeah, I was thinking about it." Dirk yawns again and glances toward the door. "I don't mean to rush you out of here, but I'm exhausted."
"Of course. I'm going to check on this," the officer pats his pocket with the card in it, "I'll come back if I have any other questions."
"Yeah sure." As the officer leaves he looks around. Dirk's too smart to have left anything out, but I still double check prepared to step in front of something if I have to. Dirk shuts the door as soon as the officer steps into the hallway and then he leans his forehead against it. I go up to him and give him a hug from behind. With my head on his back I can hear his shuddery breathing.
"Dirk, what happened?" He shakes his head at me, and slowly turns around.
"The less you know the better."
"No." I block his path and put my hands on his chest pushing him back into the door. His amber eyes that are always bright have a dullness to them that I've never seen before. "You're going to tell me everything. Now."
"Fine, but not by the door." I grab Dirk's hand and walk him to his bedroom. I push him onto his bed and then cross my arms as I stare him down.
"Now tell me." Dirk looks away from me for a second before opening his arms. I fall into them and hug him tightly. "You went to that warehouse gig and?"
