Dirk wakes me up early in the morning, and by the looks of it he hasn't gotten any sleep. I bet he just came back from his gig. So I tuck Dirk into bed as I get ready. Maybe he'll get a few minutes of sleep. Once I'm done my morning routine I shake Dirk's shoulder until he wakes up. "You're ready?"

"Yup. But I remembered something."

"What's that?" Dirk asks sitting up and rubbing his eyes.

"I wasn't suppose to eat last night."

"No you can. They say that because if there's food in your stomach your likely to throw up."

"Well that's a good reason not to eat!"

"You have a fast metabolism, I'm sure you'll be fine."

"And if I'm not?"

"Your only going to puke, no big deal."

"Oh no big deal. Of fucking course." Dirk rolls his eyes and slowly stands up. "You don't look so good. How much sleep have you gotten the past couple of days?"

"Not a lot. I'll be fine though."

"If you say so." Since it's so early Dirk and I leave the apartment hand in hand. He even opens his car door for me. I kiss him on the cheek and he smiles, but it's a tired smile. He can always sleep at the hospital.

The ride to the hospital is pretty quiet. Dirk's tired, and I don't really have anything to say. Once we're there we stay quiet too. There's a little goodbye before we part ways. I tell Dirk not to worry and just take a nap. He says okay, but I'm not sure if he's actually going to. I don't have much time to dwell on it though. My surgery is on time so before I know it it's actually happening. I guess I'm so nervous the start of it goes by with a blur, and then I'm under.

When I wake several hours later there's a slight discomfort in my abdomen. I know it's from the surgery, and I know it's only going to get worse when I'm out of here. "Hey Dave."

"Dirk?" I hadn't even looked around my room. I'm so smart. Dirk smiles at me like he knows what I'm thinking.

"Your friends already up. He was just bitching at the nurses who are not letting him leave his room yet. I believe he said he wanted to have a wheelchair race like in the movies." I can't help but laugh. I can imagine Andrew doing that.

"Yeah he's quite the character." Dirk smiles and leans on my bed. His hand finds mine and he squeezes. I smile back at him. "So are you ready to move?"

"You're funny. You're not even healed up."

"So."

"So you need to stay here for a while and make sure you don't reject the kidney."

"What happens if I do?"

"They give you medicine that basically tells your body to suck it up."

"Well ok then. So how long? Like the night or..."

"At least a week. Two weeks tops."

"What! That's crazy. I want to go now. Can we check out early?"

"This place isn't a hotel. You should stay the recommended time."

"Yeah but then we won't have any money left to move." Dirk laughs.

"That's what health insurance is for. You're mostly covered. We'll still be able to move."

"I have health insurance? Since when?" Dirk laughs again and shakes his head.

"You never pay attention to anything do you?"
