I didn't want to move. The room's light shone in my face, my eyes stinging from the brightness. I placed my fingers in the air. My shoulder stung, but it wasn't as bad as it could have been. Selena had been pressed against me, her body warm against my own. I was running late, but no one even attempted to come and find me. I pressed my lips against the sleeping woman's cheek, plucking myself away before climbing onto the floor. To wake her or not to wake her was my dilemma. I chose against it. I dressed myself, walking out into the hall before finding my way down the stairs.
"Well, you're late." Joe had been dressed in his so called 'disguise.' He studied me, his smile fading. "She's not coming to see you leave?"
"Its better that way." We carried ourselves to the gear room. It was after nine, I had dressed, loaded up on my small automatic and pressed back into the hall. Joe stood, waiting for me as I turned to find his brother. "Where's Nick?"
"He should have been on his way to Selena's room."
"Are you sure, I didn't see him." As we entered the hall, Joshua stood before us.
"The first team seems to be the late one. We already sent team two. You've got catching up to do." He signaled us towards the door. We'd have to catch a later jet but we'd still be prepared for tomorrow. Joe and I walked outside, the air now cold and thin.
"Are you sure your brother was going to Selena's room?" My voice shook as I crossed my arms.
"Positive," Joe nodded. He began the walk towards the waiting car. I looked back just once. I had to complete this mission, I had to activate B.O.N.E.S. I had to do all of this, if not for myself, than at least for her. The ride took no more than twenty minutes as Joe and I ran for the jet. We sat down, strapped in and was off in a matter of seconds. I had never felt homesick before, it wasn't a feeling I knew. But tonight, something inside of me felt broken. I gazed out of the window as buildings grew smaller and as light faded. I sat back, eyes focused ahead.
"We need to focus only on our mission. Lets put our game faces on." Joe tossed a small box towards me as I caught it, gazing over the frame. He must have noticed my hesitation on the matter.
"Can't I at least live in the moment for a few more seconds?"
"Demi," he faced me, "Its you and me right now. I need you in the zone, not out of it. My brother is back in Naples protecting....he's protecting her. He's doing his job, now you should do yours."
"I never could feel anything before," I spoke up, propping my legs up on the seat across from mine. "I never thought that I could."
"You're human," he answered annoyed.
"And so are you," I snuggled into my seat, my black pants rubbing harshly against my legs. "Have you felt an unwavering love for someone before?"
"You could say that." Joe pulled the small magazine up which sat near his waist.
"You should know that we never get to feel like this. We never get to have someone love us or for us to feel an inkling of anything back. I just," I sighed, "I just want to feel happy a little bit longer."
"I need you in the moment Demi."
"I know its just...."
"We're professionals. We're trained. Lets just get this job done. No distractions!" Joe placed his magazine back in its holder, laying against his seat. I studied him, my chest aching as I looked away. I never knew that in one moment, I could go from wanting to complete a mission, to getting out and never looking back. As the night ticked on, I decided to lay down, closing my eyes as my stomach began to ache. Although I knew ways of making the non-sickening feeling go away, I accepted it. I embraced it. I took a few deep breaths and within minutes, I was asleep.
