There was not much else to feel after hours of digging into your own background. I could no longer grasp the concept of such acts done against myself or others. There was no going back. The information at my fingertips began to unravel one secret after the next as I sat up next to Joe scrolling. He had been at my side, glaring down at the tablet just as much as I had been. A man I knew as my father, only for the first five years of my life, had no justifiable reason to be executed. He was a trained Agent taking the fall for the man who really deserved to be in his place. I still couldn't understand the details before me claiming that Joshua was my father.
That man fought me tooth and nail my entire life. He disagreed with everything and forced hardships onto me because he wanted to prove a point. To whom? I hadn't known, but the further I dived into this mess the more questions I had. Joe and I sat in his bed hours later, still doing the same thing we had been doing for a while. The outside world was no longer a concept to me. I escaped the Agency just to find out that it had never left me. If my father hired Sarah to kill me, what would he gain by that?
"It's getting late." Joe ran his hand over my moving fingers, brushing my skin with his thumb. I hadn't budged. One page after the other I devoured it until a knock came to the room's door. Joe went to answer it as I studied the images taken of me throughout the years. I had no explanation for any of this.
"Good morning." I could hear Tyler as he stepped into the room. "I didn't know you had company."
"I'm not company." I barked, my eyes never moving away from the screen below.
"Alright. Nick wanted to see what took you two so long. Apparently Selena fell asleep in his bed. He complained but the woman persisted." Tyler's words caused me to glance away.
"Selena stayed with Nick?" I was surprised he even allowed such a thing. I studied the room but couldn't find a clock. "What time is it?"
"Half past eight. Breakfast is being served before we have a debriefing at noon. You're all welcome to attend, but I'd recommend coming." The man studied both Joe and I before leaving out.
"Eight in the morning?" I slid off the sheets in order to stand. "Selena's going to kill me."
"She stayed with Nick all night. How did that happen?" Joe snickered to himself, actually showing a genuine smile.
"We should both check on them." I wouldn't release the tablet. I clutched it for dear life as we took the familiar route to the infirmary. Just as Tyler said, Selena had been laying in Nick's bed at his side. And although she was still fast asleep, the man was not.
"A sight I never thought I'd see." Joe stood at the footboard.
"Same." I studied the two, just as Nick narrowed his eyes on me.
"What could you two possibly have been doing to leave her with me all night? And don't say you were just talking." Nick tried moving his left arm but found it difficult to do with the woman next to him. "A little help." He shook his shoulder. I hesitated to hand the tablet over, but gave it to Joe without incident. Selena wasn't a hard sleeper, but she must have been exhausted. I slid my arms under her legs and scooped her into my arms, holding her head for support.
"How are you feeling?" Joe pondered.
"Better. If that friend of yours thinks I'll be sitting in this bed for two weeks, he's got another thing coming. After a few more pints of blood I should be good to go." The younger of the two propped himself up, giving himself leverage as he glanced over us. "What are we doing here?"
