~ Selena ~

I was freezing. The weather had gone from sweltering to just about winter in the Midwest. I was barefooted, sporting my lashes from different twigs against my leg. My foot was still aching. I wasn't making it out of this forest, there was no way. I tried studying the surrounding area but all I could see was an endless sea of darkness blanketed by the stars above. The animals, wherever they were, stayed their distance. I almost fell into a state of despair until I heard rustling among the trees. I was afraid that Sarah and her people had found me and would drag me back to that place and force me to do more endless coding. I slowly reached for the gun near my foot and gripped it tightly. As the brush shuffled from one way to another I held my breath and tried to focus.

"Selena?" Dread originally filled me upon hearing my name. My body already cold caused a shiver so bad that my hand trembled and the gun almost dropped into my lap. I could hardly make out the figure that kneeled before me, but I could feel fingers fall over mine.

"Demi?" My lips trembled.

"...yes." Her voice was almost foreign to me, but I knew it was her. She tossed something onto the ground before slowly plucking the gun from my hands. The darkness welcomed us as I began to cry as she pulled me into her. The air still riddled my body with the piercing cold. "Are you okay?" Her question confused me. I was bleeding from my heel, my skin was bruised and I was cold. I shrugged into her chin as she pulled back and reached towards the object she tossed earlier. And just like that, a small flashlight shone in my face. I closed my eyes, swatting at the thing as a gasp came from Demi.

"Its cold." I trembled, but this time it wasn't from the weather. Demi brought her free hand against my chin, brushing my lips with her thumb. I didn't dare look at her.

"Here, take my..." she shifted as I slowly peered back at her. She hadn't been clothed any more than I had been. But I watched as she plucked her vest off and handed it to me. I hesitated to grab it but once I did, the sight of my condition frightened me.

"I look like death." I tried joking, but Demi hadn't smiled. She studied me for a moment before reaching for my arm. "I'm okay."

"You're bleeding somewhere." Her voice was concerned as her dark eyes searched me. I helped her and signaled towards my dirt covered feet. My legs had been in bad shape as well but whatever blood covered them was dried by now. "I'm sorry." I could hear her hoarse voice shake. The silence between us after that was due to the fact that I didn't know what to say. That and how Demi instantly began pulling things out of this black backpack as if she knew I'd need this stuff. She quickly cleaned my heel and studied the object in my foot. Her hurt eyes looked up at me before she bit her bottom lip. I was sure she was debating on how to pull the thing out, if I'd let her.

"I know it's bad." I finally spoke up. "It hurts like hell."

"Wow, learned a new word have we?" She still spoke with a sort of pain in her voice. "I have to take it out."

"Won't I bleed to death or something?" My choice of words caused strain in Demi's face. She scrunched up her nose as her freckles shifted. They were mostly hiding under some dark powder of some sort.

"I have something for it. Glad I know how Nick packs." She pulled out some liquid and a gauze with some other items before sitting Indian style. "This is going to hurt."

"Just do it."

"Don't kick me." Her serious face almost caused me to laugh but I knew she was planning on pulling the glass out on her first attempt. I gripped the ground as best as I could as she placed the flashlight onto the ground as I looked away. The trees seemed to shift in the dark as animals cuddled under their trunks for protection. One moment I was fine and the next I swear I could see red. My voice vibrated as a scream left me. The pain was no match for the sheer fear of feeling blood actually leaving your body and you couldn't stop it. Demi quickly cleaned the wound as I laid back on the grass. The cold that once blanketed me was now gone. The sky shimmered as I felt a gentle tap against my ankle.
