~ Selena ~I could faintly hear mumbling around me. Was I asleep? My body felt numb as soothing sounds began to engulf the air. There were multiple people speaking, at least that much I could make out. The ship must have been violently shaking because one moment the smooth waters seemed to have turned into a bumpy and rocky ride. I shifted, pushing myself up before opening my eyes. I was met by Nick gazing at me.
"I called it. Three hours." The man spoke up as I turned to find that we weren't on the ship at all. Everyone was sitting in this large van moving down the road at a fast pace.
"What?" I tried to decipher how I even gotten into the truck as Demi faced me. She had been sitting in the front with Joe.
"Don't freak out. I kind of carried you into the van." She gave me a genuine smile as I ran my fingers through my hair. Carried me? I wasn't drunk so how didn't I notice it?
"You could of at least warned me."
"You were sleeping." Demi faced Joe as Nick happily adjusted himself in the seat next to me. The friends began to talk amongst themselves for a second or two before Nick poked my arm. He seemed to be carrying himself in a good mood.
"We're on our way to the mountains. We're not traveling light either. Ahead of us are two highly equipped vans. Behind us, one military upgraded vehicle." Nick began running his fingers across what I assumed to be the bandages under his shirt. It didn't make me feel any calmer waking up in a car surrounded by armed agents.
"We should arrive by nightfall." Joe peered at me through the rearview mirror. "First thing in the morning Demi and I will be out in the field doing some training exercises. Not like I need them much."
"Shut up." The brunette swatted at him.
"Selena," Joe continued, "Nick will give you the tools you need in order to defend yourself from our agents. But Beverly won't allow Ludlow to get close to you anyway. You carry civilian status, even our former agency won't break code to kill you. But it's not like they won't kidnap you or...."
"She's well over eighteen." Nick informed everyone in the car. "They'll abduct her."
"Wait," I added, "what are we talking about again?" I tried shaking off my morning sleep, noticing the time to be around seven in the morning. If we were going to be in this car all day, I refused to hear about the likelihood of me becoming a target once again.
"Guys, lets not." Demi finally broke up the conversation, facing Joe who only glanced at her every once in a while. It was as if the two were speaking just by looks, something she and I accomplished every blue moon. I crossed my arms before facing the window. There was nothing but farm land on either side. Silence soon overtook the van as it went down the road. The wind whistled against the van, running across the hood and roof with ease.
"What kind of training will I be doing?" I questioned Nick, as he shrugged.
"I suppose I'll be teaching you how to use those scrawny little arms of yours for good. For example, if someone is holding a gun up to that pretty little head of yours and demands you to hack into something for them. What do you do?"
"What else can I do? They'll have a gun. I'd have to do it, right?" My question received a scoff as Nick tapped Demi's seat.
"What do you do 727?"
"It's Demi."
"In an agent scenario...."
"You allow them to believe you've let your guard down. You agree and wait for the perfect moment to reach back and grab their elbow. With one swift movement you should be able to grab and hit the ulna nerve, or funny bone, and snatch the gun with your free hand. But that takes years of practice." Demi waved it off as if it was no big deal.
