Two weeks had passed since I left 'The Agency.' Selena and I found a beach home in Hawaii that fit the secluded bill. I spent most days sitting on the uneven roof tiles, staring out into the distance. My heart ached a lot lately. There were numerous feelings that began to suffocate me. I did my best to work through them, but my mind stayed clouded until Selena would come.
"Hey, are you going to come down from there?" She stood looking up at me as I gave a nod. I crawled back into the house window, swerving past the bed and down the stairs. Selena stood barefoot with a bright yellow summer dress on.
"Did you need something?" I smiled, crossing my arms as she playfully rolled her eyes.
"You want to go into town, have dinner, walk the beach..." Selena had studied me, her eyes sparkling as I shrugged.
"Whatever you want."
"Okay. Well go and get dressed and I'll wait for you here." She happily bounced on the balls of her feet as if there was something she wanted to tell me. "Go on." She instructed.
"Fine." I made it into the bedroom. Selena and I weren't dating, it was my decision to find out who I was before anything more serious went on with us. She joked that there was nothing to hide considering our intimate actions just weeks ago. My old life was practically history. A time that no longer meant anything. As I dressed in some shorts and a white flare top, I heard shuffling downstairs.
"No peeking." I ran my fingers through my hair, deciding to toss it up into a bun before making it down "Selena?" My voice echoed as silence filled the space. "Selena?"
"Are you ready?" She poked her head from around the corner.
"What was that noise?"
"I don't know, come on." She walked over, sliding her fingers into mine just before leading me to the door. We decided to walk down the road, carrying ourselves the six blocks to the city center. There was nothing I wanted more than to keep my days as calm as this one. Selena's fingers slipped from mine as we arrived at the restaurant, taking our place amongst the crowd that developed.
"What's your favorite food?" I asked, tapping the water glass on my right.
"From here, I love the scallops." I watched as Selena studied the menu, her eyes bright and full of life. It was easy to relax when she was around, but somehow a familiar nagging came to me. Something was wrong and I couldn't pinpoint it. I was annoyed that it wouldn't go away. Just moments later a waitress came over, asking for our orders.
"The daily special." I spoke up, "And a milkshake." I handed over my menu just as Selena ordered her food and the woman was off. I wasn't completely over my past life. I now knew I missed Joe and Nick. Neither tried contacting me and so I suppose they were dedicated to the Agency, as they should be.
