The wound on my shoulder stung like all hell. It bled like it too. I however wouldn't give them the satisfaction of seeing my pain. Just like when I was a child, I closed off that wall as best as I could. A nurse from the facility ran over towards me. The group of men at my side standing there, watching me, needing me to be fully functional, whatever that meant. Joshua was the head of them all, boasting about my skills and what I was capable of. Others doubted my abilities because I had been 'tainted' according to them. The woman examined the bullet lodged in my shoulder before quickly using a small tool to pry the object out. I almost lost control of the stone cold face I was giving them all.
"How much longer?" The men grew impatient. Just before the woman could speak, loud sirens began to blare throughout the building. Without even trying, I flinched. Although I hadn't grown up in this place, the sound reminded me of the drills from childhood. Something cool met my skin just before the woman tapped my arm.
"Let's go." Joshua instructed, as I followed behind. The other men tagged along as agents began to check on what was happening. "I'm guessing this is your doing?" He questioned. I couldn't focus on anything besides the loud blaring sirens with accompanying flashing yellow lights. The long white and narrow hallway seemed eerily familiar as well. I held my breath. We all crowded into a small room, standing side by side just before it jerked to the side. The room actually moved. I had never been within this capsule like object before. It was like an elevator, but much faster.
As we shifted from one side to the next, I could feel my stomach drop. We were heading underground. My fate was unknown, but I knew I had to hold on for a while longer. Nick and Joe would be within the facility and it had been well over ten minutes. It was nearing an hour since I entered the space. As the door reopened, we all filed out, rushing towards a large dome shaped area. I felt my arm twitch as I formed a fist. The smell was highly familiar and rancid.
"We're only going to run one drill." Joshua called out among everyone as I realized what was about to happen. I stepped away from the group just before my arm was grabbed, someone ushered me deeper into the space. I was left in there alone, watching the doors close just before silence engulfed me. Unlike Tyler's little training sessions, these would run differently. Just like when Joe and I were younger, these men came to see me and my 'skills.'
"Pst." I quickly sat up in bed to find Joe staring into my room. He had been standing in his navy blue track suit, waving for me to follow him.
"What do you want 728?" I rolled my eyes.
"Joshua is asking for us to come down to the training room."
"You think this is about us escaping outside yesterday?"
"I don't know. Put on your track suit." He stepped away from the door, turning his back as I quickly pulled on my pants and top. We rushed down the white polished halls, studying the few kids pacing through the space. The second we stepped towards the large dark wooden doors, we stopped. Without even having to knock, the doors flung open.
"These are my star agents, 727 and 728." Joshua had skipped the formalities and asked for us to follow. It wasn't as if we had a choice in the matter. We trailed behind him as the whispers and eyes of those near us closed in.
"We're definitely in trouble from yesterday." Joe cringed, as we turned a few corners.
"Look where we're going." I slowly rose my finger up towards the large black sign across one of the archways. We had only been down this hall once before. It lead us to the arena like place which was used to execute our parents. I could feel my skin chill as I watched the smiles that crept across the men faces.
