~ Selena ~
There were no proper words that could explain the way I felt when Demi had left. No real words to string together knowing she had gone and may never return. The few Beverly agents that joined me on the flight back to Florida were all itching to shoot their guns. They seemed to be the peacemakers in all of this. Tyler had taken the seat next to me as we readied for take off.
"Once we reach cruising altitude I'll let you check on the helicopter." He was trying to reassure me that everything was going to go smoothly and turn out alright. I knew how much of a lie that would be. We were up in the air in no time, the clouds taking form beneath the plane just before a tablet was handed over to me.
"I can't see anything." I shook my head just before it was announced the group, Demi's group, had already boarded their other flight from New Mexico. My fingers held onto the device as I forced myself not to cry again. It was never ending battle not to lose myself in front of these random people. My hair still hung across my cheeks, blocking most of my view.
"You can start hacking into Ludlow's satellite connection now." Tyler tapped the screen as I silently nodded at his action. It was hard not to think about the pain still surging through me. Every joint in my body felt as if it was hurting, breaking down and bleeding with every breath I took. My fingers moved across the keyboard with precision, my eyes locked onto the screen before a password box popped up.
"What am I trying to do first?" I questioned, as the man at my side slowly watched the box disappear. I logged into most of the blueprints which created a layout of the facility. The main floors and rooms were blacked out, a dark block covering the names and their purpose.
"Bring down their satellite connection." Tyler's voice seemed excited as I studied his eyes. They were anxiously darting across the LED as I took a breath and continued on.
"I saw you back in the mountains, studying me." I brought up, facing the man before resting my finger across the keys. "You want to know the codes don't you?"
"What codes?"
"You know, playing stupid doesn't sit well on you."
"I don't need them. We just need Ludlow out of the picture. They're a menace to the real agencies putting work out in this world."
"That's not how I see it." My voice flattened as I took in a deep breath.
"You wouldn't understand. You're just a private citizen."
"What does that even mean?" I shake my head before a small rattle of laughter comes from behind me. The other few agents lowered their voices as Tyler shrugged, sitting back in his seat.
"Just get the defenses down."
"Listen." I faced the man, my hand pressing harshly against the keys. "You're not in control of me. I'm doing this for Demi, not for you."
"Aye-aye captain." The man practically fell back into his seat as we prepared for the four hour flight. I hadn't slept since the previous night. But if I knew today was going to end up like this, maybe I would have caught an hour or two of sleep. Someone was trying to counteract my actions over the control of the satellite, but I refused to be shut out. Not this time.
"So, can I ask you a few things?" Tyler spoke up, his eyes on the paper he held between his fingers. The second I gained control of the satellite, I faced the man.
"What?"
"How did someone like you get mixed up in all of this? After reading your file, I realize that I don't know your story. Why didn't you just leave?"
