My body was cold. I could hardly move as I shifted. Why did I feel so restricted? I took a deep breath, my name being called out into the air. I opened my eyes only to find that I had fallen asleep in the tub. I climbed in the shower a long time ago and ran a bath shortly after. I didn't feel clean, and the small scars that once covered my skin were now just as pruned as my fingers.
"Demi?" Selena voice was soft. I couldn't tell if she was still mad at me, but she was definitely talking to me. I stretched, gazing around for a towel.
"Shit." I mumbled under my breath.
"Demi are you in here?" The bathroom door slowly pushed open, my entire body exposed as I pulled my knees up to my chest. Selena froze upon spotting me before lowering her eyes. "Why didn't you answer me?"
"I...can you bring me a towel?" She slowly backed out into the room as I pulled myself from the water. It was too damn cold. I held my place as Selena reentered the room, her eyes falling onto my figure. I stretched my hand out, grabbing the towel before pulling it across my body.
"I was looking for you." She had followed me into the room, leaning against the wall as I circled the space. "You don't have any clothes in here," she reminded me. My hair was dripping on the floor leaving water trails as I walked. "You want me to grab you something to wear?"
"Please," I gave her a faint smile as she studied me, turning on her feet and walking out the door. Whatever it was that she wanted to say, would have to wait. I accidentally knocked into the guitar case. I'd brought it into the room hours ago, almost forgetting about the early hours this morning. I bent down, grabbing the case before sitting on the bed. My fingers ran over the black leather before I spotted a few stains here and there. Blood from last night I was sure. I sighed, unlocking the frame before pushing the top open. I ran my fingers over the strings, a small smile making its way across my face. My shoulder, although pretty much healed, still ached. But I rose my guitar up into my lap, laying it against me before strumming a few chords. I began to play a song that I could remember from childhood. My fingers moved easily over the strings, one after the other.
"I didn't know you still had....wait," Selena walked into the room, closing the door before walking over. She placed the clothes onto the bed before studying me. "Is that yours?"
"Yeah." I gave her a nod, my fingers strumming over the last few strings.
"You went back to your house?" Her question took me off guard as I gazed up. I sighed. "So that's a yes."
"I ...."
"...Demi," Selena gazed away, taking a few steps towards the door before facing me once more. "I give up."
"What do you mean?"
"If you don't care about what happens to you, why should I?" She seemed exhausted. I was about to protest to her ramblings before she continued. "Do you enjoy the rush of putting yourself in danger?" Her voice was but a whisper now as I stood, placing the guitar onto the floor.
"I've trained my entire life to be an agent. Both my parents were agents, all of my friends are agents. 'Danger' is my middle name." I watched as she made it towards the door, I stood, running over to block it. "I know that's not what you want to hear."
"So you'll never be happy if you don't put your life at risk?"
"I don't know," I shrugged. "But I promised you this was the last mission and I'm making sure of that. I just needed a little insurance." I signaled over towards the wooden instrument as Selena sighed. She didn't attempt to leave once more, taking my answer for what it was. I quickly dressed, taking note of the time before the two of us made it down the hall. We followed the path of the first day to Joshua's. As we entered the room I had noticed that it was packed. Selena and I slipped into the room, standing behind military soldiers just before we tuned in to the tactics that would be given. No one gave either of us grief about me lugging a civilian along to a top secret meeting. Once Joshua was done speaking, the room began to clear out. Left standing were Selena and I, Nick, Joe, obviously Joshua as well as three other agents.
