~ Selena ~
The cool night air turned into a frigid chill as I sluggishly marched behind Demi. I'm sure she was trying to calculate some way out of whatever it was we were up against now, but I knew better. We were at the end of the rope, we had no other choice but to call my father. I quickly ran my hands over my arms, trying to warm them as we trailed through uncut grass as the moonlight continued to shimmer through the air.
"We have another ten miles." She announced.
"I'm freezing, and I'm tired."
"We have to meet up with the guys."
"I get that you have this master plan of keeping us safe. But we have nothing and no one to help us....we have no money and..."
"Why are you speaking as if I don't know any of this?"
"Demi, let's be reasonable here. My dad can help and the first chance I get, I'm calling him." My tired legs ached as the woman finally stopped and faced me.
"You do what you think is right. But the guys and I would have to judge the situation for ourselves."
"So you don't trust my father?"
"I don't trust soldiers. Did you just see what was happening back there?" Demi focused on me, her attention turning towards my shivering frame. "We should get moving." I could sense her hesitation. She was still trying to decipher the situation with my father but fought herself on the matter.
"You don't trust soldiers. I get it. But, I'm asking you to trust me."
Silence filled the air as the wind brushed across the sky. I could feel myself practically shudder as Demi took a silent breath and pulled me into her. Her chin pressed against the side of my head as she held onto me. I could feel a smirk crawl against my face before she sighed, pulling back to gaze at me.
"I do trust you. But there's honestly no where we can go without being followed."
"Leave that to me." I assured her as she studied me.
"What can you do?"
"We can talk about it later. Can we head over to the next city now, I'm freezing."
"I could carry you." Demi pulled away. "And don't protest, you've been lagging behind for the past few miles and I'm use to this, remember?"
"But it's ten miles." I reminded her, waving into the distance as the night air lashed itself against us. I practically nudged my shoulder into Demi's for some type of warmth.
"Sel, I've carried you through a forest before. I ran with you in my arms, or have you forgotten about these past few encounters with Agencies and what have you."
"How could I forget, I'll be having nightmares until the end of my days." My mind sort of fuzzed over for a second or so, before I gazed into those brown eyes I knew so well. "Your knuckles." I finally brought up, raising Demi's hands into my own as I studied the bruised skin. "You messed up Joshua's face, right?"
"No."
"Don't lie to me. I've heard him scream and I've seen his features. He didn't leave Ludlow like that." Before I could say anything else, Demi turned to walk away. She paced a few steps ahead of me before turning back around.
"Do you want me to carry you or not?"
"I want you to answer me."
"And I will." She expressed. "But not now." Without much protest, I was lifted onto the brunette's back, her fingers resting under my legs as she braced herself to walk forward. I dangled my arms over her shoulder, my head resting near her ear.
