~ Selena ~"How dangerous is your job?" I found myself asking Demi a few months after I was promoted. She had been to my home on a few occasions and this time was no different. She was indulging herself in sweets as I stood across from her at the Island counter.
"Why are you always so interested in my job?"
"I don't know." I shrug. "Working for the government seems fun. Especially considering training you guys always seems to be kept all hush-hush and quiet."
"Because we're not like everyone else."
"I see." There was something about her that made me drawn to the way she carried herself. She wasn't afraid of anything, at least that's the way it seemed to be.
"I'm getting my own place soon." Demi smirked. "I've never been out on my own before."
"Wait, you're getting your own place? Will I be invited over?"
"As long as you don't tell anyone." She stood from the counter, cupping a plate of cookies between her fingers.
"Who would I tell?" I found myself studying her eyes, as if I was breathing life into them. "You worry too much."
"I'm not following the rules. So, I worry just enough." She winked, walking out of the kitchen and into the living room. She was already using my place as if it was her own, I couldn't imagine what her home would be like. I crossed my arms, slowly walking into the room behind the woman. She had been admiring the photos sitting in frames before she faced me.
You can't show any weaknesses."
"What?" I shook my head confused.
"You asked how dangerous my job was. You can't show that you have a weakness. Are these photos of your parents?"
"And other family members." I nod, smiling before stepping next to her. "My dad was a mess when I accepted the job to come here. But he supported me just the same. My mother on the other hand, fought me tooth and nail the entire way." I smirked, brushing my fingers across the photo. "When I told her I was moving here, she practically broke down into tears. I did the same, but it's natural. It's what makes us human." I tilted my head to study Demi's blank expression. "You have to allow yourself to feel... something ...anything."
"Love is a weakness."
"But it's also the same thing that can make you strong." I crossed my arms, stepping away from the woman. "And if feelings and emotions are such a weakness, how come I find you searching for it?"
"You don't know me, Selena." She harshly spat.
"Yeah, that may be true. But I also know what you're not. And you're not like any of those other agents. You have a heart, even if you don't want to admit it." I smirked before glancing away from her. "Besides, there's a reason you come over here almost everyday, and it's not because of the cookies."
"Tell no one." I found her whispering before she made her way onto the couch, cradling her plate of cookies tight.
"Like I said before, who would I tell?"
The echoing sounds of screams, bullets and some type of explosion surrounded the air. I sat in the van trying to hack into my cameras, but I still couldn't find Demi. She had been missing from all of the angles I could find and I wasn't happy about it. Tyler sent another message to me from his communicator as I read it. He was now on his own, going deep within the facility to find a room full of files. My stomach dropped, because not knowing what was happening, was worse than seeing it unfold before you.
