~ Demi ~
Night had rolled in. Fog covered the sky as the summer morning turned into a cool night. I lay on the hotel bed staring directly up at the ceiling. Silent. Selena lay at my side. Quiet. Nick and Charlie were speaking amongst themselves on what we were going to do to get on a flight out of town. We were but a hundred miles away from Selena's hometown and yet we stayed in place because there was no way to make it out of the country on this short of a notice. Everything ached.
"Jasmine brought us enough food to last us until tomorrow night." Charlie notified us, although neither of us would respond. I found my body wanting to heave and throw up, but I fought against the desire. My mind wouldn't stop going back to Joe. I closed my eyes as new tears pressed it's way against my skin, covering the already dried liquid. My throat was dry. My mind was racing. Selena shifted, turning towards me as I tried to keep her out of my field of vision. But it was hard the moment her fingers cupped over my own. I silently faced her.
"I'm..." she lowered her eyes away from my own. "I'm sorry."
"Don't be." I swallowed the lump forming in my throat. "He wanted to leave." We whispered between one another, our voices only being loud enough for each of us to hear.
"He told me to tell you..." Selena scrunched up her nose, her eyes shifting as she thought about what message was said to her. "He said you almost made it another year." Selena shrugged at her own statement as I turned away from her and faced the wall, my eyes once again welling with tears. She refused to leave me to my own accord, sliding behind me as her arms slinked against my waist. Selena pressed her head into my back, her own tears being held back for the strength she was trying to give me.
We laid in silence, or a least amongst each other as Nick and Charlie went back and forth on what our next move would be. I knew Nick would blame me for whatever would happen to Joe. I too blamed myself and tried my best not to cry again. Selena thumbed my waist, hoping I would say anything but I was holding myself together by a thread. I had never been this far away from Joe without wanting to be. He left without giving me a chance to stop him, without saying a word to me, he left.
"It's okay." I heard Selena whisper against my back. I must have been shaking in her grip again as I cursed myself on the matter. "What does it mean?" She questioned as I lay confused.
"Hum?" I found myself wondering what she was speaking about.
"You almost made it another year."
"He um..." I paused. Although there wasn't much I would keep from Selena, I thought keeping this between Joe and I would make our secret last longer. But it was just days ago when all of us found out more about our files and yet it seemed so long ago in itself. "My birthday..." I mumbled as the brunette halted.
"Your what?"
"It's nothing." I closed my eyes as the brunette shifted, her arm leaving my waist as I was sure she sat up.
"Your birthday?" It was almost funny how the topic never truly came up between us. Selena would celebrate her birthday and other odd holidays, while I made sure not to indulge in such activities. The room grew silent as Nick and Charlie gave us their full attention. I sighed, shifting onto my back, Selena gazing down at me from the side.
"We should focus on how we're getting out of here." I breathed as Nick studied me. Charlie quickly stood, pacing over towards the bed before sitting at the edge.
