We treaded alongside the road quietly. The further we made it from the facility the easier it should have been to breath and yet, it wasn't. Joshua, his shifting body knocking into Joe every so often began to annoy the man. Demi had taken the lead, her tactics were a bit odd as she made us swerve in and around buildings until we stumbled across a motel. None of us had money. We had nothing and yet we made it towards the motel none the less.
"I wish she would just hear me out." My voice made a small scoff escape Nick as he faced me.
"It's her own damn fault that she didn't look into your background before she began this life with you." The man brushed his fingers alongside his arm before stopping in the parking lot. "Stay back." He warned me, cupping my elbow as Demi, Charlie, Joe and a banged up Joshua marched into the office of the place.
"I didn't tell Demi about my dad because, he doesn't know.... It's complicated."
"Well, we're all screwed now. We have no where else to go and no one to turn to, unless we wish to enlist in another Agency."
"You don't want to do that right?" I faced the man as he began searching the area with his eyes. Nick was uneasy, that much I could tell. But he wouldn't allow himself to spill much about his weakness to me. Charlie had reemerged from the office, keys dangling in her hands as she waved us down to follow her.
"Let's go cupcakes." The woman yelled over, pacing towards the last room of the building. I paused to see if Demi would soon trail after the woman, but she hadn't.
"Give her space." Nick tapped my shoulder, a soft gesture he never truly gave into doing.
"But she needs to hear what I have to say."
"She won't listen." He warned me. "I've seen that look in Demi's eyes many times before. You're not getting through to her, at least no time soon."
"Because she thinks I betrayed her."
"She thinks you're a double agent." The man sighed. "Like you said, there are some things we can't unlearn."
"When did I ever say that?" Although I hesitated to move from where I was, Charlie was getting irritated and called to us one last time. We followed her into the small motel room, studying the queen sized bed which sat in the middle of the floor. A television screen was playing static as the woman flicked through the channels. I stood near the window, my finger trialing the thick curtains before Charlie stepped over.
"Don't do that. It attracts attention." She warned, her eyes rolling before she faced Nick. "You should check on your brother and that very pissed off friend of yours." Charlie's stance was so stiff and demanding as she made her way into bathroom. She was searching every corner of the room as if something was waiting for her.
"If Demi needs me, she'll know where to find me." Nick plopped himself down on the bed before taking notice of the lumpiness of the mattress. "People sleep on these."
"I don't think people do much sleeping in a place like this." I informed the man.
"Then what is there to do?" He paused after speaking, just before Charlie rose her hands up creating a circle with one hand and wiggling her index finger on the other. I almost snickered until a loud scream shot through the air. It was clear who's voice it was. Joshua wailed so loud that my heart felt as if it fell into the pit of my stomach. I raced towards the door, only to be stopped by a hand swatting at my own.
"Like I said, you should check on your friend." Charlie warned Nick once again as he stood, brushing past the woman and out into the warm air once more.
